Topic: looking for an app to tag images on my desktop e621 style; suggestions?

Posted under Off Topic

I'm looking for a desktop program that will let me tag and search images on my computer the same way that's used by this site.

It would be really useful for things like harddrive image browsing, everyday photos, reference images for art, and sketches. I've tried using just folders, but the downfall there is when things fit into multiple categories.

So far the best I could find was picasa 3, which is no longer supported, not that great of an image viewer, and can't play gifs. And downloading it was a hassle because you have to find a download from a third party.

I'm just looking for something that has a simple image tagging system,is light weight, runs on win 10, can support animated gif, jpeg, and png, and preferably doesn't look like hot garbage.

I ended up installing... gosh, this was complicated, but, basically, a webserver running booru software on it. It took me like 2 or 3 evenings to get ruunning on windows because I was starting from zero knowledge.

There are some softwares like... https://www.tagspaces.org/ that might be neat though I've never used it, and only just found it now while googling.

Would you recommend a webserver + booru software over something like hydrus?
I've never used either, and was thinking of asking a similar question to this a while ago.

Mine was going to be, "if you download your favourites, how do you organise them?"

Also, if you copy the metadata into a CSV file, is it possible to import it, or would you have to tag every image manually?

dang, both of those look like good options!
I'll have to try them both out to see which I like the best.

So far it looks like tag spaces will be easier to set up, but the free version is lacking in features that a paid version has, so i'll have to see if it has what I need in the free version or if the paid version might be worth it.

hydrus looks more complicated to set up, but it also looks a bit more promising in terms of extra features like being able to additionally include media like swf's and such.

Anything else? I'm curious to see if there might be something more light weight or more feature rich; as long as it has a tagging system and can be run on windows desktop i'm willing to test it out.

I havn't tried to use hydrus, so I can't speak on that side.

The pros for me on a webserver+booru software meant that I could use a VERY familiar interface for interacting with my images. I could set up wikis, implications and aliases, no problem. I used software called myimouto on windows for this.

However, a con is that the program's basically been abandoned.

It also DID take me over a day to figure out how to get everything working. It wasn't just "run two executables"... it involved installing several other "stuffs" that were required to make it work. It took a lot of troubleshooting too. (and, potential extra con: They included a newbie how to install guide that was .... obtuse, to say the least. BUt that's a moot point, because none of the links I found for the guide actually still work..... there's a "quick guide for advanced users" but that's greek to me..)

Here's a link to a site using myimouto: NSFW Hypnohub

but it was really great to be able to set up everything the way I wanted it. I used the artist/copyright/character tags for different things.. I tagged things like the mood of an image, or the sort of setting it suggested to me (I was using it mostly as artistic inspiration board)

There are other softwares, as you can see on wikipedia ... the problem is, at least for me, most of them are for non-windows operating systems. And some of those that are windows-able, are.... weird. (shimmie, for example feels weirdly... uncomfortable somehow.) ... so I don't know if there's a good option somewhere for it.

Another pro was that I could access it from any computer in my house, which was nice.

On the other hand -- it's only pictury-stuff, and honestly, I'd love to do music too. *shrug*

no clue. YOu're speaking greek to me :)

Thank you very much for all that!

I'm on Linux, so I guess that's a plus for having some more options.

From the wiki page you linked, the ones that have been updated recently are danbooru, szurubooru and moebooru. I think I'll try danbooru first and see how easy/hard it is to add/modify themes, then try moebooru if it's awkward, as I think that looks the most like e6.

The one thing that's bothering me is that if I've got 5000+ favourites that I want to add, is it going to be possible to add them in an automatic way? I've got a few ideas on how to do it, but I guess we'll have to see.

At least it'll keep me busy, though I need to finish my e6 downloader first, to get a copy of all the tags for each of my favourites.

Thanks again :)

Also, with you saying you'd like to use your booru for music, could you have the image as the album cover and then add file:///D:\Music\MusicFile.mp3 in the description? It's a bit of a workaround and it doesn't work on e6, but it might work on myimouto.

Alternatively, you can add metadata to music files, I know VLC lets you embed comments there, then you could search the tags with Windows' built-in search, such as:
comment:uplifting -comment:slow

Which would search the file's "comment" metadata for files that contain "uplifting" but not "slow." It wouldn't have the extended functionality of a booru, but it'd let you tag and search your music at least.

I also just tried it with media player, which works as well. You can right click the column names, click "choose columns," and check "tags." Then you can right-click and "edit" on the track you want to add/change the tags on. Then search with: tags:tag1 -tags:tag2 in media player.

Definitely! This is the reason why I keep nagging my hardware dude (ahem, husband) to give me a Linux-y-thing for this. I'd have to learn a lot, but I'd have WAY more options for this sort of thing.

(I have also thought about locally hosted wiki software to keep up with roleplaying information, as well as.... I think the 'youtube-like video thing was also, you guessed it, linuxy!)

It's totally possible that there are others -- but danbooru is, I think, the biggest/most popular.

That also said, e6 was also based off of danbooru, many eons ago, so that's probably why there's a similarity :D

I'd love to know how your adventure goes!

I know there are booru out there that basically rip the data off of other booru, so I imagine it'd be possible, especially if you're not interesting in changing the tags around really.

You wouldn't get the aliases and implications, but if you're only importing, you don't really need it.

That's a pretty great idea! It's not exactly what I'd want, but it's definetly a good idea if I can't get anything else working for me.

On the other hand, I'm not eager to plunge into the... huge amount of music I have kicking around.

That is a LOT of fantastic food for thought -- because, that's exactly what I'm looking for. thank you! :D

If it's just for a small server with nothing cpu intensive on, I'd recommend a Raspberry Pi, the tiny pc, not an actual pie. It's powered through usb and doesn't cost much to leave on 24/7.

Or to get to grips with Linux in general, before having a big thing set up, you could install Ubuntu in a virtual machine, like VirtualBox. It also lets you save the machine's state and roll it back, so if you break it it's a quick fix.

For wiki software I'd recommend DokuWiki, it's lightweight and essentially just some php files you add to your web server, without needing MySQL/PostgreSQL/another database.

Though I think there's a lot more wiki software than booru software, which could be a good or a bad thing.

I'd also say to stay away from TiddlyWiki, I found the syntax confusing and getting a table of contents more so. Plus, when you click a link it opens it underneath the bit you were reading, rather than linking to a separate page.

I heard that a while ago. I'm wondering how easy/hard it'd be to implement the same/similar theme that e6 uses.

As a side note, when I was looking through the themes, I thought of making a more joking thread saying that instead of banning users, they should instead be forced onto the "hot dog" theme. Though that might be a too severe and inhumane punishment..

I presume it'd be best to dmail, rather than keep reviving this thread? At the same time, posting how I got on with it would still be on topic for the thread, if anybody else wanted to attempt it as well.

I didn't realise that was a thing. So it might end up being easier than I thought, though of course e6 has rate limits, so I'd have to be careful with that.

I was thinking of downloading the tags, then using a script/program to add the tags and images directly to the database, rather than going through the UI one by one. But yeah, if I can set it to automatically mirror my favourites, that'd be pretty cool :)

I hope it works ok. One thing I saw was if you add the "tags" field in Media Player you can then search the tags in Media Player, like I mentioned earlier, but can't with Windows' built-in search. So you might need to edit one of the other metadata fields that Windows' search recognises, though it shouldn't take long to find one that works.
