Why are you interested in finding Italian speaking people?

I hear that people who know Spanish can typically communicate with Italian speakers without too much trouble. Mind you, I don't actually know Spanish either, but I do have an atrocious French accent.

...You know, if that helps or anything.

I noticed a lot of words in several languages can be phonetically strung together and understood with a little thought.

For example, English and German - the Germanic word "Verboten" sounds a little like its English meaning, "Forbidden" if you say it out loud.

Not sure what this has to do with anything, but I thought it was coo'.

This is because both languages are part of a collection of languages, called the Romance languages, that are similar in speech, grammar, spelling, and structure. All of the languages in the Romance language are derived from Latin, more specifically, Vulgar Latin. Romance languages include Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Italian.

In fact, there's an auxiliar language called Interlingua which is formed by words from different Latin-based languages so any speaker of a Romance language can understand it. It's pretty cool.

And yes, an Spaniard can understand many Romance languages, Portuguese being the closest (probably because their communities are also quite closer geographically). Italian is a bit more different (specially the pronunciation), and others like French or Romanian are not intelligible at all.
