Topic: So is there a thing that allows notification of new posts?

Posted under General

Kinda like how FA works, as an example. Is there anything that will, like...allow me to "watch" certain tags and be notified of new posts? Only ever used e621 for browsing really, never looked into other features of the site.

You can download a number of user-made browser extensions that will add such a feature, but otherwise... no.

Yes.

RSS.

  • Choose and setup an RSS aggregator. There are online ones and selfhosted ones, also desktop applications (which are different from 'selfhosted' in that they don't require a basic working server to already be setup on your machine). Personally I use rawdog, which is a minimalistic app in the third category, but is a commandline application (so not something the average user is comfortable with)
  • go to the search page you want to monitor (eg female)
  • View page source (however you do that in your browser.. it's in the rclick menu in Firefox)
  • Search (Ctrl+F) in this source for '/atom'
  • Find a line like
<link href="https://e621.net/post/atom?tags=female" rel="alternate" title="e621 - Posts" type="application/atom+xml">
  • Select the url part of this line ( https://e621.net/post/atom?tags=female` ), Copy it. This is the RSS atom feed for that search.
  • 'Add new feed' (or similar) in your RSS aggregator
  • When it asks for a url, paste in the one you copied in the previous step.

Pretty easy IME, after the initial setup of your RSS aggregator is done.

There were previously threads discussing RSS, including different software choices. Unfortunately forum search seems to be totally borked, so I can't link them.

What?
Why doesn't the RSS icon pop up on the posts page..

*googles*

Well apparently Firefox removed the RSS button without me realising, and you need addons to get it back.

Yep, sure enough, get an addon and the RSS feed pops up..

Thanks for saying about that, I'd never have known that was a thing.
