Topic: Important: Email Problems

Posted under General

As the title says, there are currently a couple email hosts that do not accept any emails e621.net is sending out, the list of known hosts that ignore our mail is currently:

  • any hotmail server (.com, .de, .ca, .co.uk, ...)
  • any live server (.com, .de, .ca, .co.uk, ...)
  • any outlook server (.com, .de, .ca, .co.uk, ...)

If you wish to create an account be aware that you will not receive the account activation email and thus won't be able to complete your registration.
If you wish to reset your password be aware that you will not receive the password reset email which contains the key to actually reset your email.

We recommend using the multitude of other email hosts around (for example gmail.com or yahoo.com) to receive email, if you have an account already we also recommend switching the email over to another host until we can sort this issue out.
The option to change your email can be found here, it is the third block from the top of the page.

As always, if you can't access your account in the first place, either through forgotten password or missing account activation email, then be sure to check this thread out and otherwise email us at [email protected] and we'll help you as soon as possible.

I think you can always create an gmail or yahoo account and make an automatically forward to your default account to receive the mails.

Correct (although, in my opinion, gmail is far superior to hotmail).

In a nutshell, we are sending the message and the mailer daemon is not returning it. The message is successfully received, then filtered on Microsoft's end. It's likely in the spam folder, but none of our tests have been able to identify anything.

If you are unable/unwilling to get a Gmail account, we can still help you with your issues at the e-mail address NotMeNotYou provided.

I'm guessing that this issue is fairly recent since I went ahead and reset my password back in April when we were having all of those login issues, just to be safe.

I got the e-mail successfully back then (I use a hotmail address), but it had a warning message attached to it saying "Be careful! This sender failed our fraud detection checks." I think it was sent to my spam folder initially, but I don't remember well enough to say that with 100% certainty. I'm about 85% sure it was, though.
EDIT: 100% sure now. Just dug the email back up and it has a flag that says that I had moved it to my inbox.

I just searched around for why it was giving that message, and I found this page. Hopefully this helps you guys out a little.

That may be helpful, we already forwarded that to our devs, thank you!

No problem. I hope it gets sorted out soon, since I don't really want to have to make a new email account just on the off chance I need to reset my password in the future.

If you can get a message sent to an account on one of the affected services and will be able to get the headers from it (i.e., if it will go to spam, not get killed -- might possibly need to tweak the spam filter settings), and send them to me (you have my email), I will be able to tell you what's wrong.

Can't run tests myself because e621 has been blocked in Russia (due to someone uploading some human child porn that was later deleted) and won't get unblocked until site owners contact the Russian censorship agency (roskomnadzor) notifying that the offending page is removed. So until then, I can open it only via Opera Mini on my phone (due to it being a proxy browser).

The problem with hotmail is not limited to e621 either. I have tested with my local isp email account out of USA and it also refuses to receive the mail. Perhaps it's M$ being picky, perhaps it's an issue on their end. But as stated and if you can, switch to another email provider.

What if you used one of these servers to activate your account BEFORE this announcement? Will we still need to use a different account?

We can manually activate accounts, just contact us under [email protected].

What's the domain? We're only noticing it with Microsoft domains, but maybe we can do additional testing with yours.

This doesn't affect me, but I just came over here to ask why this is even happening. Maybe hotmail and stuff is anti-porn/anti-furry?

There are a couple misconfigurations in the outgoing mail setup. Looks like the outgoing mail server's IP address has an rDNS PTR to app2.e621.net, but app2.e621.net is missing the A record to that IP address. Once the mail setup is fixed, you can submit yourselves to this form to have Microsoft consider you for whitelisting.

Yeah, I had trouble with this with my domain sending to Cox addresses as their email servers would straight drop the connection. Their tech support was useless too. Took me forever to figure it out that the rDNS was incorrect and THAT was why I was having trouble.

Works for me, but I'm using Cricket Wireless.
The reset mail landed in my Junk Folder so it's possible to add [email protected] to your Safe list.
That might let Hotmail/outlook/etc to not block the Email.

I sent this over and I am being told that it's fixed. May take a day or two to show some decent results.

Despite the report, our rDNS is up and running :)

Well, looks like at least hotmail is now accepting our emails, but throws them into the spam folder, it would be awesome if some of you could confirm or deny that for us.

Just had a password reset sent to me. Went straight to my inbox, not the spam folder.

This time the message attatched to it was:

Parts of this message have been blocked for your safety.
Show content | I trust [email protected]. Always show content.

This is typical behavior for password resets, account activations, and really any email with links or embedded images in it from other sites that aren't on my safe list yet (and clicking the "I trust X. Always show content." text adds them to it, as you would expect).
