Topic: This website is under heavy load

Posted under General

We're sorry, too many people are accessing this website at the same time. We're working on this problem. Please try again later.

The site IS working but sometimes makes these false claims, unless we had a major influx of users I don't see how this is possible.

false claims

More users, more images, bigger queries, peak hours, etc. etc. etc.

There have been an awful lot of those today. As far as I know, it IS related to heavy traffic, but why today has been so bad with them I have no idea. Apparently the site's usage is huge in scale and the inefficient parts of the code just gobble up resources during times of high traffic/requests. I understand the developers are working at optimising the site's code so that it handles traffic and requests more efficiently, but that it's a slow process. That's just what I've heard though, so it might or might not be correct.

Just for future reference, it probably works better to post bug reports, error reports, etc on The Bug Report thread here: https://e621.net/forum/show/28544 Because that's where the developers look first.

Honestly I never understood how the site could be under a heavy load, I mean look at fa (it still has basically the same problems but not quite as often) it handles quite a bit more traffic than we do, BUT we actually have more storage space than they do, last time I checked. Maybe it's a booru/server thing?

Do you know what it takes to filter and sort a 500.000 image database for up to 6-10 search terms, some indexed, some not, then give this information to users?

FA is simply 'display page X', almost never 'create this fucking huge list for me and then display that'.

Yeah, try searching for anything on FA. Not only does the search function suck (because tags are COMOLETELY unmoderated) but also if you give it a complicated search it takes forever to give you the results. E6's search feature is its super power, and its kryptonite.

I think this description is more accurate than it should be.

Currently it is, but Spight is hard at work improving the performance, but it will still take quite some time until it's going to be as optimized as possible.

Just letting you know, ads.dragonfru.it seems to be down. I only mention this because it may be giving the impression that the website is under heavy load when it isn't.

Frequently it only loads the side and top bars but no pictures (posts). I get "Waiting for ads.dragonfru.it..." until it times out (20+ seconds) and then finally displays the rest of the page. Enabling adblock fixes the problem entirely.

Already known, but the server guy is unavailable at the moment.

Same here.
Dear site operators, please post an "ads are working again" notification when this problem's been fixed, so I can turn off Adblock for e621 again.

This, or load ads asynchronously, because this has also affected me when I browse using my phone and the pages just hang displaying only the tags list and the header. I suggest using a <script> tag at the end of the page's document (to allow loading in case async scripts are not available) which would load the ads in their places when the page finishes loading.

It could be something like this (file name and path are assumed):

<script type="text/javascript" async="true" src="://ads.dragonfruit.com/scripts/ads.js"></script>

*high fives spight, the madman who's updating the innards of e621 without going crazy.* Anyone taking on such a big project deserves a little acknowledgement sometimes. *tips hat*

This shit only ever happens to me at like 2am.

But it usually goes away within a minute or 2.

Time zones. It's not 2am everywhere.
