Topic: How to tag new characters and artists?

Posted under General

I know a lot of people will think I'm an idiot, I definitely am, but I've been confused on how to actually add a new artist and character to the site.

The help/faq section went completely over my head I admit, I have a hard time understanding things sometimes, could someone explain how to add them?

So do I just add them to the pic as I upload them, like just tag them as if they already existed? or do i need to make a wiki? or some other thing I haven't thought of yet? (if someone has an actual guide that would also be useful)

I am super sorry if this isn't the right place to ask it/if it's really obvious, I just never use sites like this.

Thanks for asking!

Wikis are entirely optional, usually made to help users understand the usage of tags, so they are not necessary to just create a tag. To make a tag that has never been used before, casual users can use meta tags to add new tags. Some examples of meta tags include artist:, character: copyright:, etc. So artist:ARTIST_NAME_HERE would make the artist tags.

However, if the tag already existed prior to the post being tagged in question, users under a certain ranking (I believe under privileged) cannot edit existing tags with meta tags. This was to prevent mass confusion that often happened when users changed the type of a tag already in use, which happened... a lot.

If you wish to alter an already existing tag's type, head to the tag index (top of screen, "tags"), find it, and edit it.

Thank you! I think I understand!

Artist wikis are different.
They contain links to the artist's websites.

Artist wikis are, of course, 100% optional.
(like pretty much everything on e621 except gender)

But when you make a new artist tag, it's very helpful if you also fill in the artist wiki.
Many users will just tag artist:joe and not give any links.

Go to tags on the banner of the site, type in the tag and classify it as what you want it to be.

I have a related question: what is the right way of tagging / creating tags for someone who is both an artist and a character?

General format for ambiguous character tags is character_(owner), which, while it does look a little wierd in that particular scenario (steve (steve)), still works. For the artist, just add _(artist) at the end.

_(artist)

shouldn't be used, it used to be that the site made things with that suffix an artist tag, now it doesn't, hence why a lot use it.

It should be:

Character_(character_owner)
Artist

With artist just being the artist name.

Oh sorry, my bad
