Topic: Uploading art right after the popular reset

Posted under General

Hi, i wanted to know your opinion about the artists who upload their art on e621 right after the "popular" reset to have better chance to get noticed.
Do you think it's a bad thing? I do it everytime i upload my art on e6 but i kinda feel like it's cheating or something to get more views / votes. Meanwhile, there is some other
artists drawings that are better than mine and uploaded in a random time of the day that don't get much attention because it's almost the end of the day and reaching the "popular" is more difficult.
In a nutshell i think some artists drawings deserve better to be in "popular" than mine.
I've already talked about this to people and friends and they all told me that it's fine but i wanted to know what you guys think.

I did not even cared until this thread. You should take account time zones and that many users trying to upload something at the same time may result in an unintentional DDoS attack.

It seems to be worked on for a long time. Hope it will happen, popularity should be about your skill, not your effort to cheat the system.

Probably going to either do away with popular or rework it so it is past 24 hours, not popular by day.

This was brought up long ago already, when do you intend to make such change?

It's actually kinda similar trend of what I have seen on furaffinity, where people are botting their YCH and adopt ads so that once they go out of the front pages "most recent" section, they delete the submission and resubmit it to show up there again.

Competition has gone up and many are not shy of using shady tactics.

Was about to link that, thanks.
And yes, the whole section is just stupid (like explained on that threat) and abuseable to the max. Right now I would think that abusing the system is right thing to do to get fair chance, because nobody else is going to stop that's for sure.

Beta site currently does not have any links to "popular" section at all, instead there's link to "hot" which is essentially link to order:rank metatag, which if I have understood correctly orders posts based on score and the time that has passed from it being posted. This would fix all of the issues with popular section as it is now.

So basically a reddit approach, which is what I also wanted to suggest.

I think that's less abuse-able and more fair to new posts uploaded over different times of day.

Using the code I wrote in forum #256655 would be a good replacement for the popular section.

date:2019-12-20 order:score

mimics the current popular by day implementation.

Adding support for date:24_hours_ago could be used to prevent the "cheating".

order:rank

is fine too, I guess. I haven't tried it yet.
