Topic: Writing Section

So, I think that e621 should have a writing section. Since artists can draw and upload their stuff here, why cant writers write and post. It could be original or fanfiction. Artists could draw pictures to go along or anyone could find pics that match. I think we should see about adding this.

.. Haven't we already had this conversation, with the conclusion "It's a nice idea, but basically it's just not what E621 is about"?

I dont know whether or not the conversation's been had, but to answer the quoted bit, it should be considered. People could vouch for it and if we get enough then maybe it will be added.

I'll admit, the idea could be cool. But I think it's a case of trying to wear too many hats (as the phrase goes). By staying specialized, e621 is able to concentrate efforts on what it does do, and do it very well. It's not that the idea is bad, it's just that I think it's beyond e621's scope to try and do that in addition to all the image handling it does now.

Also, there's already literally hundreds of places to upload writing on the internet. There's even collaborative communities where people cross-share their talents and do things like spontaneously illustrate other people's stories, or write stories based on other people's art, and kind of inspire each other back and forth. So it's not like there's a big need for a place to upload writing, or even writing+art. They exist by the dozens. The idea is cool, sure. But it doesn't seem like a good idea for this site in particular.

ETA: A sister site for stories (that was run as well as e621, with clear, consistent and accurate tagging on a user level) would be awesome. And I think that would be better because how tags apply would have to be a little bit different, just because the nature of the medium is different. How it conveys information is a little bit different with stories vs images and having the same tags try to do double-duty would be a little bit like trying to twyk AND twys with the same sets of tags. It would murk it up and reduce overall usability for both. But with a sister site, they wouldn't conflict. Each site could customize their policies (tagging, quality, etc) to match the challenges of the type of content they're handling. And you could always link between them. So I'd love to death the idea of a sister site that's for writing. I'm just putting that out there.

Agreed. Adding functionality for stories would be much akin to mashing two entirely different sites together - lots of new rules/guidelines needed and it'd probably be a logistical nightmare to try and fuse to e621 without massively breaking something as things stand now.

Honestly not that hard, save the stories as a .pdf or a .jpeg and it works with how the site is now.
The only thing I see that would happen with this is that unlike with images, you cannot preview a story the same way as a picture, and it would probably get blacklisted by most everyone.

Put a story in the description of an image if you are the artist or commissioner?

The very same discussion was brought up in forum #100196 - In the end, as Furrypickle mentioned, it was decided that E6 is not/will not be about stories.

If one is to write fan-fictions, at least make an artwork of it.

That way, you can place a little backstory to your artwork.

A sister site would be amazing except for the effort of creating a new site. If its possible for us mortals to do such a thing, we could ask Varka are an admin and see if he or they think its possible and if the would consider.

For some reason, the above comment did nor quote furrypickle. My apologies furrypickle.

While I don't have a problem with a writing section, as a bit of a writer myself, it goes down to a simple matter of traffic. There hasn't been that huge of a following for people who want to submit stories, and fanfic sites are traditionally not that high-quality.

Given the amount of work needed to online a site like that, I don't know if it would end up being to the benefit of the community. Maybe, if we start seeing a resurgence in people wanting a place for written works, we can look into this again.

Just one MAJOR point I should add.

Server stress.

Well, you see, the problem with that is that, unlike pictures, one cannot simply glance at a wall of words and quickly tag just about everything like they can with a picture. Sure a picture is worth a thousand words, but shit, those words are a hell of a lot faster to process than reading a fic.
