Topic: [REJECTED] Tag alias: coronavirus -> covid-19

Posted under General

The tag alias #46291 coronavirus -> covid-19 has been rejected.

Reason: These two tags need to be aliased, as both are in use. Coronaviruses are a category of viruses including SARS, MERS, and the 2019 novel coronavirus COVID-19, so it would be more correct to have 'covid-19' be the official tag name, since people tagging 'coronavirus' have been using it to refer specifically to COVID-19.

EDIT: The tag alias coronavirus -> covid-19 (forum #290218) has been rejected by @Millcore.

Technically speaking, COVID-19 is the disease (ie. the pathology resulting from being infected with coronavirus, especially to a relatively high degree;dry cough, fever, weakness, difficulty breathing, etc..). This is intentionally distinct from the virus itself.

coronavirus occasionally is being used to refer to the actual virus (SARS-CoV-2) causing the pandemic, as in.. anthro coronavirii, apparently?? .., but mostly seems to be used in relation to 'the societal situation arising from the COVID-19 pandemic' (eg. images warning people to stay home and wash their hands, or images lampshading the social isolation)

Frankly, I don't see how we could validly have a COVID-19 tag. The aliasing you suggest here uses a semi-technical term to imply something which is in fact technically incorrect, which is Bad Tagging by my reckoning; and the technically-correct use of 'COVID-19' mostly isn't going to be clearly evidenced in an image, similar to how we generally can't tag 'flu' or 'cold'.

Half serious, we already have copyright tags for the Christian holidays and new year.

Fridge thought:
Official Art should be a Meta-tag, not copyright

Yeah, I think I'm going to manually change this one from coronavirus to covid-19_pandemic; coronavirus should be aliased to virus instead, and covid-19 should be aliased to include "pandemic" since there are images relating to the pandemic that don't show either a character suffering from the disease or the actual SARS-CoV-2 virus itself.

Update: Done. Please use covid-19_pandemic instead.

This is not what should have happened here.
Unless Im reading incorrectly.

Did you change coronavirus to just virus? Because thats a bad thing to do. There are tons of viruses and all have different distinct appearances.

Furthermore did you, from what you wrote. Alias corona to covid_pandemic? Thats also wrong.

Either way covid 19 is a disease and the pandemic is a response and measurment of the disease. That is a bad tag and this is a bad alias.

Unless I totally failed at using the alias search correctly, coronavirus doesn't seem to be aliased to anything currently.

I think "Done" was only meant to apply to "I'm going to manually change this one from coronavirus to covid-19_pandemic" based on what I've seen so far.

I did not change coronavirus to virus. I've manually changed instances coronavirus to covid-19_pandemic (and also made a wiki page) and suggested aliasing coronavirus to virus. I know that there are multiple different viruses, but I don't believe that this site needs to be that specific about viruses.

Also, I can't alias anything myself. I am a Janitor, not an administrator. The aliasing, implicating, and BUR tools are admin tools, not Janitor+ ones. I only manually changed the tags; nothing has actually been aliased yet.

The original coronavirus tag itself was a bad tag because it was being used for anything remotely relating to the current pandemic and the current COVID-19 disease but not the SARS-CoV-2 virus, even though (as we know) there are multiple coronaviruses and by all technical means "coronavirus" should be for the actual virus(es) itself/themselves. None of these tags, including covid-19_pandemic, are really all that good to work with, but the coronavirus tag was easily the worst of them and had to be changed right away because of that technically.
