Topic: About commenting

Posted under Off Topic

So, whenever I'm wanting to type a comment. I really get nervous if people thinks it's creepy, offensive, spam, trolling or role-playing because I don't know if other users and staff will take it as a rule violation or not. I would never break the rules on purpose. Would it be appropriate to report our own comments and ask the staff if they think it breaks the rules or not?

So once again as general reminder, if you break the rules, you will first get neutral warning, then negative warning, then suspension and then permaban, also records decay in 6 months and breaking rules of other categories do not count towards same warning.
That means, you will have to fuck up 4 times during 6 months period to get permabanned from the site and during those 4 fuckups you can do several more fuckups on breaking other rules in the meanwhile. (of course if you are literally breaking all every rule on every category at tall times, staff can ban you sooner if they deem so, but on paper, you should be fine)

Also good way to think of commenting is that could you say that out loud in a public showing? Because it is as simple as how you would talk to people in public and how would you talk to your friends and partners.
Most of the time if someone is getting warning for creepy comments, they were reported by another user who felt like the comment was worth reporting. This is kinda also why I say that this isn't a pornsite, because even if we have lots of it, we still handle material as artwork primarily and people who do get warned for creepy comments usually comment like people do on rule34 and porn video sites.

Me and other users have been confused as to why this user named tiamat5 was permabanned for being accused of a creepy comment but he wasn't even talking about wanting to have sex with the characters he was just pointing something out.

If it's because he called the parents "mommy" and "daddy" then that's not creepy. Kids and even adults still call their parents "mommy" and "daddy in real life. So if it's okay for people to say that regardless of age in real life then why isn't it okay here?

Don't forget that examples listed in records are typically only the tip of an iceberg (or so I'm guessing, as I'm hardly in a position to know anything useful). That means there's a lot of other creepy comments the user has left lying around that show a persistent pattern of poor behavior.

If I had made the comment you link to, it's likely no one would notice or care. The moderators would look at my other behavior on the site and figure that I just made a hit-or-miss attempt at witticism that was a complete miss. At worst, I'd likely just get a warning via PM that I wasn't quite as clever as I thought I was. Flubs, goofs, and verbal faceplants happen, and the e621 administration know this.

On the other hand, the user you selected as an example appears to have habitually made creepy comments galore. Warnings were apparently ineffective as were ensuing records. The admins didn't ban them on a whim and then simply ignore any potential appeals of that ban.

Admins don't just look at the one problem comment. They have to take into account the user's other comments and the context behind those comments. My one hypothetical screw-up of a comment is hardly comparable to the cited user's long term pattern of behavior, deemed constantly creepy not just by admins, but also other users.

That is insane amount of comments, they spend whole month of their life just to write comments essentially. Also if I remember correctly there's hundreds of reports from users about their comments.

I generally do not mind any of these comments, but at the same time aknowledge many of their place is not here or they could've voiced their opinions in more mature manner.
If artist likes that someone talks dirty of their stuff, you can go to sources to do that.

They are not here to discuss everyone. and the one you named has been talking to pictures and doing sexual RP

And if you look at their account they actually took to reading about the rules very well

Right, but you can also see how they're of the humerus kind that have a history of being seen as acceptable judging at least by the high ratings they get.

Upvoted creepy comments till scare some artists away. And that is the big thing.

Before Bad Dragon took over ownership here this place was a mess for rules, one of ehivh was that comments were creepy all the time. That it creeped out users was one things, but the site was losing artists who were otherwise cool with stuff here. On, say, FA they could filter out creeps if wanted but could not here. I believe that is one of the important reasons there is a tightet lid on being creepy here

Ah, there I feel the distinction between what makes artists uncomfortable and what's considered normal should be communicated, otherwise it seems to be arbitrary what gets someone in trouble.

In my defense, none of the comments I've made were with the intention of role-playing. Personally, I'm rather averse to it, as I find it rather awkward and (as much as I dislike the term) cringey. That being said, I will admit that if some of my comments were taken out of context or without enough background knowledge (specifically internet meme history) then I can see some of them being slightly odd and perhaps discomforting.

Why do I comment so much? I've always been the one to try to make a joke in the comment sections of internet forums, as it gives me a nice feeling of accomplishment that I got someone else laughing. Seeing a good deal of jokes in e621's comment sections made it feel more welcome and enjoyable, and so I thought to try and strive to do the same here as well. Unfortunately, it turns out that sometimes formatting a joke to try and make it look funnier ends up making it look like role-play apparently. In that regard I do try my best to keep my jokes obvious, and I try to think of the following exemption to the role-play rule before I post a comment:

This is intended to prevent a culture that is inherently self-destructive and takes away from the website. There are acceptable forms of role-play, typically that which reinforces a point, creates humor, or otherwise does not cause a disruption. Even in this setting, however, role-play must be just a single one or two line comment, and cannot be made in response to another role-player.

To that end, I still feel that just about every one of my comments fits this description, as they are usually a joke in reference to the picture, and to my knowledge most of all my comments have gotten positive or neutral reception, which to me indicates that the joke landed, or at least that people didn't think much of it. That's not to say I don't have any flops, I'm not perfect, but I certainly try to do my best to improve when I notice one of my comments had poor reception.

Quite frankly, I feel as if the rules themselves are too ambiguous as to what is and is not considered roleplay. The initial conclusion I came up with nearly a year ago is that referring to oneself or to one's own fantasies in a comment deems it either "creepy" or "role-play" and for the longest time, between following this idea and seeing other people's comments, it seemed to ring true. Of course, this epiphany came about due to me experimenting with comments, rather than having a solid idea of what is absolutely a rule-breaking comment. Even then, however, after a couple of more negative flags on some of my comments I was almost certain were obvious jokes or would take a 10 second google search to realize the reference, I am not so sure anymore.

And to that extent, I think am understanding more and more as to why people may feel uneasy when it comes to commenting: the rules are too vague, and the punishments for breaking them seem to me a bit too harsh and inconsistent. The upside is that I have been told by site admins that the rules are being updated such that they are more refined and clear-cut as to what is considered role play and what is considered humor. The downside is I was told this over 6 months ago and to my knowledge haven't heard of any updates since. But my hopes are that such an endeavor comes to fruition sometime soon, as it would certainly help ease the minds of would-be commenters as well as make moderator's actions in that field more reasonable and justified.

Apologies for the rant, this is kind of a touchy subject for me :P

tl;dr I'm sorry If I made you feel uncomfortable with my comments, I just wanna make people laugh and I'm trying my best with what I know. Think very carefully before you post a comment, and make sure you aren't breaking any commenting rules. And if the rules aren't clear enough, there are supposedly new ones being made to make it more obvious as to what should and shouldn't be commented.
