Topic: [FAILED] alias bow -> bow_(disambiguation)

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The bulk update request #124 has been rejected.

create alias bow (0) -> bow_(disambiguation) (73)

Reason: bow is an ambiguous tag, as stated in the wiki.

also alias bowed_string_instrument to bow_(stringed_instrument) so it match the rest of the bow_(*) list. nevermind

There are some implications missing for ribbons, some are still waiting approval :

EDIT: The bulk update request #124 (forum #293473) has failed: Error: Alias would modify other aliases or implications through transitive relationships. (create alias bow -> bow_(disambiguation))

bow_(stringed_instrument) refers to the tool used to play a bowed_string_instrument, not the instrument itself. The proper name for those instruments is bowed_string_instrument and is consistent with string_instrument. This shouldn't be changed.

I checked in and I realize the source of this confusion. bow_string_instrument is an informal and ambiguous term aliased to bowed_string_instrument. The 'bowed' part of the name refers to the verb 'bow', which means to play an instrument with a bow. To clarify this, a bowed string instrument is a string instrument meant to be bowed instead of plucked.

You could also use update bow -> bow_(disambiguation) as a more direct route (instead of using create alias bow -> bow_(disambiguation) or remove alias bows -> bow), and avoid all the hassle of de-aliasing and re-aliasing bows.

This should alias bow/bows -> bow_(disambiguation) at the same time.

Didn't know about this. Thanks for the tip.

I noticed a bow at post #2278727 (and variant post #2278733 ) , but it looks like a toy bow,
tag with toy_bow instead of bow_(weapon) ??

This is always a tricky subject. On the one hand, a toy bow is clearly not a weapon, so the weapon implication would be wrong. On the other hand, pretty much anything can be made a toy of. Having a toy version of every tag is just asking for trouble… there could be no end for how many tags there could be. Also, I feel like toy_bow is destined to be one of those tags that won’t get more than like five results, ever. How often do you really see those?

Another issue is whether or not you can actually call the bow a toy. A bow is a bow regardless, is it not? It looks like it could fire a real arrow, making it a weapon. What we see here is not a toy bow, actually, but toy arrows. If you took the arrows away you’d just assume it was a regular bow, not a toy. And… I’m hesitant to say that we need a toy_arrow tag. That seems even more niche than toy_bow.

So… in my opinion, I’d just tag that one as bow_(weapon), all things considered. Maybe even tag the toy arrows as arrow, too, though I’m much less sure about that one. Maybe just don’t tag them at all? Or tag it suction_cup_arrow or something, and perhaps a couple other posts featuring them well show up eventually.
