Topic: Suggestion: don't delete, archive!

Posted under General

Hey all, I've been noticing a lot of art that doesn't meet quality standards not having any other sources, so I thought: if something doesn't meet quality standards why not just archive it in a different part of the site? If I can get answers as to why this wasn't done yet that would be ideal.

Sorry if there's any typos or formatting issues, I'm on mobile at the moment.

Hosting content that almost nobody would actively search for would seem like a terrible waste of resources.
Besides, it will also give people a reason to upload low quality works onto the site.

If you wanted to upload, it's better to upload directly to FA (or any other gallery site) since it is (a) more appropriate and (b) more lenient with quality standards.

Be right back, drawing a bunch of extremely simplistic red rockets in MS Paint and posting them to boost my upload limit.

Well, isn't it? I was under the impression staff can still see the content of deleted posts. (I'm assuming unless the content of the post is illegal to possess.)

I think I threw up idea of like, junkyard at some point, because there definitely are uploads which aren't meeting guidelines of the site, but might still have othervice value to them. Additionally as avatars can only be posts on the site, this would lessen the amount of posts cropped from some anime just to use as avatars. Additionally technically speaking, giving access to a file that has been deleted for being againts sites guidelines should be fine.

But yeah, then we get to the problems which start from, when do we start to delete content from that when it's already content we would've been deleting to begin with? We do not have infinite storage space. If we allow seeing posts that are deleted for againts guidelines, will that insentivise people to just upload them anyways? Should we allow users to edit tags and sources on them, potentially taking away time from posts that would require them more?

Like, yeah, I get the idea, but I can't say how to properly execute it without it bringing its own set of issues.

Moving the goalposts like that would just create Deviant Art 2: Furry Boogaloo, and no one needs that. Quality standards are there for a reason.

I like the idea of a personal gallery for each user. I don't know if that's within e621's purview but I would find it useful. Maybe a limited number of uploads or total size?

I'd say that having an onsite "junkbin" for pictures that don't quite meet the site's standards is unnecessary. To be manageable and of any use, it would need to be limited, perhaps to images that currently fall in the twilight zone of not being so poor as to be deleted in 30 days, yet not quite good enough to be accepted — essentially, those that somehow make it to 30 days. But this would basically be little more than the automoderator automatically approving those images instead of rejecting them. That's basically just moving the twilight zone towards lower quality works, and there'd still be people pushing to make that junkbin even bigger to accept still lower quality works to the point that e621 might as well accept everything submitted. At some point, a line must be drawn, to say, "This low of a quality and no more." That line already exists. What point is there in moving it?

We already have the ability to make galleries of a sort with sets, combined with uploads and favorites. Yes, they're limited to posts that meet the quality standards of the site, but e621 isn't a site for galleries individually tailored for each user. Rather, it's one big gallery for everybody to use, and just as each person has standards for their own galleries to keep them from being cluttered by unsatisfying stuff, so too must e621 maintain an overall standard for everyone's benefit. If an artist doesn't meet that standard, it's not a case for lowering that standard, but for the artist to continue improving their work. We want artists to make art that's of a quality to be approved here. By adding in a junkbin, that incentive to improve is weakened.

If I wanted to see a bunch of low quality garbage I'd just hit Browse on FA.
I'd rather not have that here
