I have tried the blacklist line

monochrome -animated

and it’s not working. Any help?

Do you have it on a separate line?
cat monochrome -animated
will only blacklist things that have all three qualifiers present (Cat and Monochrome are tagged, animated is not), while
cat monochrome -animated
Will blacklist properly.

Yes I do have just the two phrases on a line. It looks exactly like I said in the OP

Seems to work fine on my side. I've added monochrome -animated to my blacklist, and the monochrome order:score search only shows animated GIFs and WEBMs: https://i.imgur.com/jVHsxHL.png
What does that search show for you? Also, could you double-check that the monochrome -animated line in the sidebar (under "Blacklisted") isn't crossed out? If it is, click on it to enable the filter.

It works as you described when I add “order:score” but when I simply search “monochrome” nothing comes up. The results are blank

Yes, that's because there are no animated posts on the first page of monochrome... With 100 posts per page, the first animated posts are about 6 pages in for me.
