Topic: [APPROVED] Tag alias: amber_loli_(character) -> kohaku_(fuu)

The tag alias #50617 amber_loli_(character) -> kohaku_(fuu) has been approved.

Reason: The tag currently used by e621 for this character, amber_loli_(character), seems to be built out of a case of over-literal translation plus a bit of descriptive fluff. I don't know who came up with it, or what its source is, although there's a pool using the term as well. I think either kohaku_(fuu) or kohaku_(bd_collie) would be more accurate. After all:

post #1030954 "こはく" → Kohaku, and post #2169523 "KHK-chan[g]" → Kohaku

Why I think it's wrong: the creator and artist writes the character's name in unambiguous hiragana as こはく ("kohaku") (see post #1030954). It could be written in kanji as 琥珀, but the creator spells it out in hiragana instead, for either informality or clarity. However you spell the name, she's definitely named after the the Japanese word for amber, the fossil resin gemstone. She's tagged as amber_loli_(character) here, so that must be her name, right?

IMO, non-English names should be transliterated into Latin script, but not translated into their literal equivalent English word, if there even is one. English names are all over the place and most have no remembered meaning. I think it's incorrect to call her "Amber", despite that being a perfectly good English name with the same underlying meaning. You don't translate 井上信 ("Inoue Makoto") as “Faith Top-of-the-Well ”, for example, even if that's what its characters mean literally.

What to do instead: she is tagged as kohaku_(fuu) elsewhere, where her artist is tagged fuu_(frol). I suggest that e621 adopts that tag, since the artist is quite widely known by that alias around the web. kohaku_(bd_collie) would be fine for e621, mirroring the official artist tag here.

  • Gelbooru/Danbooru axis: A B (wiki) C) supports "kohaku_(*)"
  • Lolibooru axis: D) supports "kohaku_(*)"
  • TBIB axis X supports "amber_loli_(character)" (but don't they copy from e621?)

I don't think the creator calls her "Amber Loli" anywhere. It's more likely that someone has been overliteral with a translation engine, and mistaken a proper name boundary on a Twitter post or similar.

EDIT: The tag alias amber_loli_(character) -> kohaku_(fuu) (forum #303194) has been approved by @Millcore.
