Topic: Traditional Media Post Takedown

Posted under General

I'm a bit confused. I posted some traditional artwork the other day, and tagged it as such, not at all implying it was digitized, and I come to see the posts were taken down for "Does not meet minimum quality standards. (Bad digitization of traditional media)." The photos were of great quality, I even checked prior to see if traditional media was allowed, and I saw the tag with an abundance of posts. So why was mine any different?

I don't think that digitization means what you think it means. It simply stands for the process of conversion of a physical picture into a digital format.
Mairo, the janitor who removed those posts, was not satisfied with the quality of the results of said process.

The posts were deleted exactly because they were photos of artwork, rather than a scan.
Neither of your deleted posts had sources of any kind, so I can't really say anything else regarding the quality of those photos.

The only advice I can give you is to try to get the pictures scanned. Photographs are rarely, if ever, accepted.
To quote the My post has been deleted FAQ thread:

Low quality photograph of a drawing
When uploading drawings, you need to use a scanner. Do not upload images taken with a cell phone camera. Only a professional-grade camera used in a brightly lit studio can match the quality of an ordinary flatbed scanner.

Basically if there are clear inconsistansies with the post that are result of it being taken as a photograph, it's likely to get deleted. These include bad contrast, inconsistant contrast, excess noise, blurry visuals, hue shifts from incorrect white balance, angle being shifted/tilted, etc. etc.
Essentially, if it looks like clear photo rather than proper scan, the chances of it getting deleted are much higher. The sites main focus is digital drawn furry artwork, so that's the starting point and everything beyond that is extension of that, so traditional artwork is allowed, but it would need to be digitized properly so that it stands as digital artwork.

With these posts, contrast was bad and inconsistant, there was excess noise and the linework was slightly blurry considering the resolution. Sometimes it is possible to do simple post processing on photograps to clean them up, there's a lot of tutorials online how to do this e.g. selecting black and white points, denoising, perspective correction, etc. but from my personal experience especially contrast shift from one edge to another is really hard to fix on post and it's always much easier to just use scanner - additionally post processing is also generally good idea even on scanned material and handling already higher quality source material also makes it look even better in the end.
(Also at least in here, wifi enabled printer-scanners that work with mobile as well for those without computers, costs something like 30€/$40 brand new nowdays)

In this instance, it was also somewhat hard to determine in post #2583432 would the character count as human or not according to uploading guidelines as I do not see any features that would make that character count as anything other than human. post #2583429 at least the genitals were non-humanoid.

Also as general reminder, previous approvals do not justify new uploads. If something is accidentally approved, that will be deleted, rather than new post approved on that basis. However quick look under traditional_media_(artwork) it does seem like most uploads look fine at least from thumbnail, did delete two posts approved by Slyroon just now for being clearly againts guidelines.
