Topic: [APPROVED] Tag alias: adoptables -> invalid_tag

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The tag alias #52238 adoptables -> invalid_tag has been rejected.

Reason: Since adoptable is an invalid tag, adoptables should be invalid too.

EDIT: The tag alias adoptables -> invalid_tag (forum #311878) has been approved by @Rainbow_Dash.

Oops, I forgot that when the original was made we didn't have the invalid tag category

Were you able to undo any tag updates that approval caused?

Well, isn’t the purpose of using the invalid tag category as opposed to aliasing to invalid_tag to identify ambiguous tags that should be replaced with something else? As far as I can tell, adoptables can’t be replaced with any actually valid tag, and the only thing to do with it is remove it. In that case, wouldn’t it make more sense to just alias it to invalid_tag anyway, then have a bot regularly remove invalid_tag from all posts? Or, perhaps even better, make a change to the site that makes invalid_tag automatically remove itself once applied.

The alternative, of course, is to have all these random useless tags like adoptable and OC and pretty remain in the invalid tag category so that we have to go through each of them individually and delete them. We’ll do that for, what, hundreds of tags, possibly?

More or less. One other issue with using the Invalid category is that it doesn't actually invalidate the tag. People could still tag and search for adoptables like any other normal tag, ignoring the fact that it's in the Invalid category. If there's really nothing to do with the tag, and there's a high chance of continued (mis)use, it's better to alias it to invalid_tag, in my opinion. The Invalid category is useful for ambiguous tags, or tags you otherwise want to give information about how to fix. But if there's nothing to fix except to remove it, and people want to keep using it as if it means anything here, better to bury it instead.

Simply removing the tag does nothing to inform the people using it that they shouldn't, unless they painstakingly go over the tag list and try to remember what they originally put there. If they decline to learn, well, that's a record (as is repeatedly adding invalid_tag to posts, so it's not as if anything's even changed there).
