Is navel really a useful tag? If we're going to invalidate armpits I have my doubts that anybody is actually making use of the navel tag either

Pretty sure why there is a navel and belly tag is because they're two different fetishes which are rather common. As far as all the different types of navel, idk.

The tag itself has over 230,000 entries, so clearly someone is finding it useful, plus navel fetishism (or people that just find them attractive) is pretty common. "Detailed navel" tags posts where navels are drawn/painted "realistically", more than just a curved line or circle, so it should automatically add "navel" as a tag, if it doesn't already exist on the post.

Armpit fetishes are rather common too, for what it's worth. Like armpits, there could be tags for specific things involving the navel, but since navels are incredibly common to see, have very basic depictions, and not be fetishized. Plus it's an easy tag for people to neglect, so I could see the argument for navel itself being not very useful.

The armpit debate has been pretty well hashed out by now, but I’m going to state again that I don’t see it as being a useless tag. Sure, we can assume that most non-ferals on the site have armpits, and likewise that most mammals on the site have navels, but they’re often not visible due to pose, clothing, or fur. It doesn’t seem like a bad idea to tag them when they are visible in case people want to see them. Even if you’re a navel/armpit fetishist, if you just want to find all the posts that contain these things, you have to search all the tags that include armpit at once, and/or things like raised_arm (which does not give very reliable results).

Besides anus making a post explicit, this isn’t much different from tagging anus. Like, yeah, most characters have them. It’s a very common tag. We still tag it. It’s a useful tag if anuses are what you’re looking for.

Not as common as you might think. I bet you see more navels on exposed stomachs than anuses on exposed butts. And just the visible existence of an anus in sexual images can be an important factor for some people in being able to enjoy it; not everyone likes to see the anus, even when it itself isn't involved in sexual activity. I'm not aware of the navel and armpit being quite on that same level (I'm sure there's someone who could have an issue seeing it even when it's not fetishized, but far less than the anus in comparison).

Not sure why this thread derailed to talking about the validity of the navel tag. Personally I don't see any value in removing it as a tag, or any similarly popular "general" tag. It's not confusing anything, and it's not underused.

For the armpit tag (which was invalidated four years ago, it seems that someone necroposted), "raised_arm" "hands_behind_head" "armpit_hair" and other tags in combination can be used to see armpits. "Belly" and "Midriff" don't necessarily mean "navel".

Probably just cuz the belly button often isn’t shown. Same with the nipple tags.
