Is it because it is VP8 and not VP9?
Is this an Apple issue or an e621 issue?

re-uploaded vp9 without anamorphic

You should ask Mairo why that post got deleted, instead of continuing to comment in this forum thread. You can DMail them by clicking the "send message" button on their page, and although they may not respond, it's a more direct way of asking for assistance than asking in the forum in this case. Most forum-users can't see the video in the post that got deleted so we can't really offer advice, Mairo would have seen the video and can tell you why they deleted it.

Updated

Anamorphic means, that the video file is captured or stored at differend aspect ratio and resolution from what it is supposed to be played and looked at. Back in analog days, with consoles and DVDs if you wanted to play in 16:9 widescreen, the signal was simply anamorphic and you would use your TVs settings to stretch the 4:3 input signal into 16:9 what the content is supposed to be.
However nowdays the content is produced digitally and shared digitally, so there's not really that huge reason to use anamorphic files outside of preservation of old media (same with interlaced video files) and even with that, for consumption you most likely want to encode a file which is at the desired resolution to avoid possible playback and quality issues.

For files uploaded here, basically every single time anamorphic file is uploaded, the creator of the file has absolutely no idea what is the problem, meaning that they did not do it deliberately, but it's byproduct of bad encoding settings. Now there's not really any way of knowing if the playback or anamorphic resolution is the correct one and then with playback, there's situations where the player ignores this and plays the file at anamorphic resolution instead of playback resolution, so there's no information of what's correct resolution and users might be seeing it at couple differend resolutions. On top of this, e621 does not support this, so the metadata for the file is incorrect and generated preview and thumbnail are also at anamorphic instead of playback aspect ratio.
On top of this, anamorphic video is stretched in real time, meaning there is also quality degradation which can be bigger or smaller depending on user, viewing in chrome looks far worse compared to viewing in MPC-HC with properly set up MadVR.

Many dedicated video websites like Youtube or Newgrounds (twitter I think has problems with these files as well), they transcode your uploaded file regardless, so stuff like this is basically nuked in the process, but we host the exact same file that you upload here, hence why the requirements for the file to be proper are higher. So in this instance it's more of a e621 problem than apple problem if that's what you are asking.

I know some software like Handbrake for some reason have anamorphic set to "automatic", which essentially means that any video not 720p, 1080p, etc. specifically is being made so it's stored at those predetermined resolutions. I'm guessing it could be some kind of compatibility or filesize saving thing, but that's all I can think of, VP8, VP9, AV1, h264, h265, etc. should all support arbitary resolutions without any problems as long as the dimensions can be divided by factor of 2. Some video editing and other transcoding software can also have settings such as "non-square pixels" or "DVD compatibility" which can be set on automatically depending on project and encoding settings, but I can't say for any specific software.

As for VP8 and VP9, both are supported on the site, but VP8 was obsolete already years ago, it's basically just simply worse from all aspects in comparison to VP9. The main reason to use VP8 was for better compatibility, but even phones have supported VP9 since Android Kitkat which was released in 2013 and hasn't gotten security updates since 2017 so anyone able to play VP8, should be able to play VP9 or they should seriously be considering updating their software or upgrading their hardware. This is also why our 480p and 720p samples are generated with VP9 as well.

Also Apple is still one of the only manufacturers and software providers who do not allow WebM playback for their users, simply because they can and they can get monetary profit if people used MP4 h264 and especially MP4 h265 instead. That's one reason why we have specific system in place to allow apple users to see webm files here, but if they try to watch them from direct link or download them, they will not work outside the website until Apple gives proper support for WebMs for all of apple users. (Please note that all browsers on iPhone are just Safari but differend coat of paint on top):

I mean technically I'm explaining the exact same goddamn things through dmail over and over and over again, so having it somewhere publicly is not a bad idea.
Also it literally says the reasoning for the deletion: it's considered broken/corrupted and that's because the file is anamorphic.

Fair enough, sorry for insinuating otherwise.

I can't help with the actual problem, but for future reference, if you type "post " before the #number, it converts into a hyperlink automatically. For example: post #3030700

It took me 2 hours to figure what you even meant
I had to ask my friend, who messaged you on specifics

It would be great if instead of deleting a post outright I could get a message telling me to fix the file so it could be used in it's place

Not a thing you can do on E621. Yet.
Staff have the power to replace images, but not users. And even then, I'm not sure if staff can replace video files.

It is once again 7 in the morning and I have been handling literal hundreds of posts, including tens of deletions. I simply do not have the time to explain every single deletion to every single person, especially as most post deletions are not even made by the artist so explaining this kind of stuff just goes to literally nowhere and everything would be lagging and then there's people asking why their posts are taking weeks to be approved. Additionally I personally exclusively use FFmpeg which is command line only utility, which further complicates things when stuff I explain cannot be used nor found on software they use.

I am in process of making wiki page for transcoding and encoding files, but that has been WIP for couple years as I haven't had the time to format and write that, because I should be prioritizing my real life work which actually pays and be able to use free time on something else than just this site and I suck at explaining and teaching things anyway. Because even something as simple as GIF isn't always that simple and bad conversion can take an hour to explain what is palette, frame timing instead of framerate, how does dithering work and why even thought twitter says something is GIF doesn't mean it's GIF but actually MP4.

Like yeah, if we had 100 janitors instead of 5 or if we literally didn't manually handle curation of every single upload, this would be nice thing to do. But right now I'm mostly just really annoyed seeing yet another "let just janitors do this" suggestion when we are already being buried with workload so I'm sorry if I sound really bitchy, especially when I just wasted 7 hours yesterday literally only handling animation approvals and today found user waifu2x upscaling content with hundred uploads.

Staff can replace video files and extra measures are put in place for that so that it actually works properly instead of breaking everything. I would hope the system would already put for everyone to be used soon.
But even then, if there's enough difference, it's paid content, something is broken, etc. then usually it's still preferred to just straight up delete the file than to replace it. The replacement is for posts where it would've been deleted for reason "inferior of post X".
Especially with broken posts the comments are really often full of "works for me" and "doesn't for me" back and forth including lots of downvotes from those who have problems, which is then even more confusing to everyone once the file is fixed.

EDIT:
OK, I do still want to come back to this after going through night and after work.
Yes, this is the kind of situation that this could've been handled much better than I did and even simply replacing this specific file could've worked most likely well considering the problem wasn't wide puting level.
I also acted like elitist asshole.

Sorry Dacad, I'll try to handle stuff better going forward.
The favorites are also moved from the deleted post to current one and current post approved now.
Also thanks Duffy for being such great friend.
