Reason: Not sure why we have both tags, plural form should probably alias to singular

Well, this is officially A Mess.
For 4 years, there has been a pending alias from head_pat to patting_head in topic #20620. head_pat currently has far more posts than headpat - 794 compared to 30. patting_head, meanwhile, was manually nuked sometime last May, despite the continued lack of an alias.
Can we please just pick one tag and stick to it?
Well that's not too bad. It just means we're only half-done.
Unfortunately, because of just how many different alias/implication/BUR suggestions we have backed up (each of them with multiple layered and contradicting parts that are often years apart)... tackling things is going to be one step at a time. Hoping to untangle all of the interwoven proposals before moving any other piece just isn't possible every time. Especially since what might have been true x years ago may have changed in many ways since then.
But bringing up the related pieces that you know about is helpful. And linking these things with context is really helpful. So thank you for doing that!
From what I can see, we have:
headpats - was nearly empty, aliased to headpat currently
patting_head (1) (most have been moved to headpat awhile ago)
petting_head (311)
head_rub (35)
Head_rubbing (4)
All seem to be mostly used for the same gesture. Looking through the results under all of them are pretty much indistinguishable.
I think the best two candidates for the final tag are "head_pat" although that will emphasize the more "on the very top of the head, up and down motion", which is only sorta true. Or "petting_head" which allows a bit more leeway for the range of exact placement and exact movement implied that I saw under all of those results. Which makes me think that last option might end up being a better fit.
So I'd lean towards putting all of the above tags to -> petting_head.
Any thoughts or insights on that idea?

Alright, I've cleared out the other two pending contradicting proposals for this tag, and linked them back to here instead. I'm going to give it a few days to give people a chance to weigh in. If no major problems are found, then that's probably where it will go. Hopefully.

Patting and petting I take to be two distinct actions. Head patting is when you touch down (often also lift up, then back down, continuously) in one spot, like a very light hit. Petting is when you slide your hand over the head (often down the back of the head and neck, though it can be forward over the forehead or to the side). I can appreciate it can be hard to tell the difference in a single static image, but it is sometimes possible to tell, and I don't think they should be merged together.
