im not so new, but ive always been wondering, are all the views on posts real? im curious because it seems like quite a large number to me.

Yes. It shows how many times the page has been visited

yea but it counts every view, so even stuff like multiple views, google bot etc. its not counted like on lets say youtube.

Bots....really? Why would someone want a view bot for their image they uploaded? Views don't even have that much value on here like youtube

noooo, you got me wrong, i ment that google bot (not only google, even bing does this etc. :D ) that catalogizes stuff, you know its here because reverse image search links to e621 all the time. not sure how often/many times it checks a site, but it keeps the cache, so its more than once.

I don't know how it's written in e6's code, but from what I've gathered crawlers are extremely up front about announcing themselves as being crawlers. I know early in google's history a lot of website owners got really pissed when their site got would randomly get hit with enough traffic to tank the site (since the crawler would unpredictably "download everything it can find" when it got around to visiting that particular site). It's possible some thought someone was trying to hack into their system, but judging by Windows 95, I don't think many people were concerned about security back then (lel).

Anyways, it would be fairly trivial to write a small bit of code into whatever counts the views along the lines of "ignore page views from google_crawler, bing_crawler, ... , or anytime the same IP address tries to view something more than once in an hour/day/etc."
