Topic: Why does e621 use webm instead of mp4 for video files?

Posted under General

I've always wondered why e6 uses WebM instead of MP4 for video files on the site. MP4 is a format which has higher compatibility with devices than WebM, additionally source videos are more often than not MP4s, which require conversion to upload here and thus potentially cause a loss of quality. Additionally, other boorus I've seen use MP4 for videos as well.

Is there some kind of reason, technical or otherwise, for using WebM?

Patents and licensing, are one reason. MP4 is patent-encumbered and requires licensing from the MPLA (MPEG Licensing Authority), meaning you need to abide by their rules to use it and pay them when required, whereas WebM is royalty-free with an automatic patent grant (you don't need permission, or to pay anyone to use it).

the people who run this site are cheap bitches who don't wanna pay for licensing fees and the developers of most video reading apps are old farts who don't wanna support a decade old format

You're free to start up your own horsecock gallery with blackjack and hookers at any time. Also get a real device instead of a toy with a fruit on it.

Well, all the website is doing is simply storing video files, afaik it doesn't do any additional conversion or post-processing, so I don't see why patents would be a problem here. The website simply serves the video files so that the browser's built-in player, or any other video player, can play the video. Additionally, patents haven't stopped other furry websites (like InkBunny) from hosting MP4s either, so I don't think it would be much of a problem for e6 either.

Why not cut the middleman out and just close your account rather then setting it ablaze?

I dunno, i feel like 14 hours would be enough time for the mods to see and pass judgement on this. Seems the higher ups aren't taking it too seriously

gotdam i ain't even trying to diss the admins here, BitWolfy will forever be a GOAT in my mind for not just making RE621, but responding to a forum post i made a long while back about ways to mass-download pools!

no, the"Old Farts" i was talking about was apple and the devs of QuickTime Player for not natively supporting webm
