Topic: Does mobile compress images more?

Posted under General

I'm not particularly knowledgeable of image compression and whatnot but I do know it lowers the overall quality of the image. I'd like to be on my computer to upload posts but with my jobs I'm not able to do so most of the week and when I do have time off I'd like to spend some of it relaxing. Do smartphones compress jpegs more than pc or is the quality of images downloaded on mobile equal to that on pc?

It shouldn't compress the images any more, assuming your phone/browser doesn't have any settings to compress files while using mobile data.

If you want to be 100% sure you could use the upload by URL feature on the uploader rather than saving and uploading manually.

At the very least, iOS has this problem in my experience. Practically at random, it auto-converts images to JPEG.

I've been looking for a jailbreak tweak to fix this problem since I first started jailbreaking, but to no avail, and the JB community laughs at me for thinking it happens in the first place. Thank you for at least confirming that I just might not be hallucinating...

as an ios user: allow me to gaslight you some more!

on my iphone 7 i went to post #3423615 (which is a png) and pressed the "download" button, then i held down on the image and picked "add to photos", and when i looked at it in the photos app sure enough it was bit-for-bit identical to the image i downloaded on my laptop

i don't know how you download images on your phone (which is why i detailed what i did so you can replicate it yourself) but i figure it might just be some obscure toggle in settings. namely switching "optimize iphone storage" to "download and keep originals" might help some

I tried that. I don't even have iCloud photos enabled for this very reason. But the problem seems to come and go.

Like, I can upload a PNG with a transparent background to Discord, then I can upload it again the next time I open the app only for it to be bitcrushed out of nowhere.

I have an SE2 with iOS 14.8, for the record.

I've just been consistently using android so if anyone has had problems with images being screwed with by android please let me know.

Under android it depends on which application you use to select images. If you use the file picker/file manager/documents view, it will submit full files. If you use the gallery app, it will give you better previews before upload, but recompress the images in most cases.
