Topic: Webcomic Update Consultation

Posted under General

I have the following question: I have a copy of all the pages of a webcomic, but the artist deleted the same from his deviantart, so i should upload them or not?

I believe the rules discourage webcomic uploads in general.

Isn't the reasoning just that we don't want to take traffic away from the artist's sites? If they no longer have sites, that reason falls apart.

If it's no longer available anywhere except the Internet Archive, I'd think it would be okay to upload here. If you can, you can see if the artist is okay with it being posted here. They might even let you have better versions of their comics to upload.

Depends. As I understand it, for active series, a small sampling is allowed, in part to encourage viewers to go visit the comic's own site. Still, some artists are okay with their comics being mirrored here and even upload their comics themselves. For dead series, especially older ones that aren't available anywhere else, they can be archived here on e621 (pursuant to the site's guidelines), although, for larger comics, it would be best to break up the uploading into smaller, more manageable chunks.

According to the upload guidelines, it's discouraged only for series that are exclusively on the artist's site, or some comic hosting site where it earns revenue, which e6 doesn't want to take viewers from them since it would be like taking money from them. Once it's put on FA, DA, or some similar place, though, it's fair game since that allows people to view it without generating revenue or personal site traffic, and if it's not on the artist's site or some comic hosting site, it can't be earning them revenue or site traffic.

Good news, guys. The author authorized me to publish the webcomic, so i will start updating right now.
