Topic: Faves and Score, Separated?

Posted under General

I've been around the Net, and compared to other boorus this site has a LOT of extra stuff done to it. However, one thing I've noticed is how there are pics with lots of faves, but low scores. Many boorus I visit automatically add a point to the score if you add it to your fav list. If you put it on your faves you must like it, right? Basic logic stuff. So, with all the stuff done to e621, why doesn't it have this fav-score feature that simpler boorus have?

This motion was brought up recently and the majority thought it was a bad idea.
Couldn't find it just now, but I'm sure another user can link the thread for me.

Oh, I see. If the majority is OK with popular pics having misleading scores there isn't much that can be done, right? It's the majority, after all.

You can sort for favorites or for score, so why would we need to roll them into one?

What if I downvote something but to fave it to post it later to other people? (cheese grater image would come to mind).
What if I use my favorites only for hilarity purposes but not for fap score?

forum #102626 forum #102621 were the latest I can find, forum #130170 mentioned that it might have to do with reducing vote spamming, but I'm not entirely convinced (though anything to make voting easier would do that). There may be a limit to how many times you can upvote per hour, but that's probably just for comments.

Personally I find almost more interesting to keep them separate; order:favcount and order:score can sometimes give completely different results and I think "combining" them somewhat would make them too similar. That's just me though.

Edit: This post in the feature request thread is an older one.

I only use my favorites as post it notes to remind me to check out an artist.

In what way is the current system misleading?

Updated by anonymous

I think that the vote system works to judge what "most" of the people would like to see, extreme fetishes are not really that "most" people like to see, even though it may be good art and the person should blacklist things they don't want to see in the first place.

As many people stated above, there are multiple reasons to favoriting an art without liking it enough to upvote it.

I just don't have an argument strong enough to discuss this, but i wanted to state my opinion.

Edit:

Like this picture, its a humor picture it has a lot of favs but its not good enough to get a high score.

it has 6 upvotes and 120 favs.

The thing about the score is that, unlike the favcount, it also includes downvotes. And, for reasons that I sure hope you can imagine, that post undoubtedly has a lot.

It probably does have a lot of downvotes but if we went by for each fav +1 trying to exclude that everyone that faved it actually didn't vote the post would have more upvotes, its impossible to determine how many upvotes or downvotes it has.

i was trying to find something to strengthen my argument but its kinda hard to base something depending of different numbers of variables.

In the end i still look like a dummy

Updated by anonymous

I like keeping votes and favorites separate. I favorite posts that I like and want to find again frequently and I upvote posts based on the quality of the art. As such there are many posts that I've upvoted but not favorited and vice versa.

You know guys, favorites are named "favorites" for a reason. The fact that you use them like that doesn't change the fact that favorite function is supposed to be for pics you like and if you're using it differently then sucks to be you.

IMO if favorite feature is not connected to score in any way then it should be removed. There are private sets for "post it notes to remind me to check out an artist." or other things like that.

Just because people don't use a feature in a way you like is not means to remove it. Faves are book marks for most people, since favs easily go on your main page for easy finding later.

If you really want to try and push this silly point, maybe push to rename it.

They are definitely used fairly similarly. Chrome uses bookmarks, Safari uses bookmarks as well as using favourites as "super bookmarks", I think IE still uses the term favourites for bookmarks. Also, interestingly...

favourite (noun)

  • a record of the address of a website or other data made to enable quick access; a bookmark.

favourite (verb)

  • record the address of (a website or other data) to enable quick access in future: you can see who else favourited the same pictures.

I fave what I want, when I want, and there's not a damn thing anyone can do to stop me

banned people can still favorite stuff, right?

People != few vocal users on forum.
Do you really think that it's just a coincidence that results you get by searching order:favcount are rather similarly ordered to order:score excluding
a) Pics that are higher res of removed posts because favs are transferred automatically and votes aren't for some reason.
b) Pics that are very old, because there was reset of score system in the past.
c) Pics that has a lot of downvotes because there is not negative favorite.

And one more question. If it's really supposed to be just a bookmark then why priv+ (or contrib+ I don't remember) users are automatically upvoting pic when they faving it?

That was brought up in forum #102621 and forum #100886
Don't really think anyone would care if that function got removed.

Yet it clearly shows that intention of favorites is to mark your favorite pictures. I like how it extends individual (contrib+ now, but it could be changed) scoring scale to (-1, 0, 1, 2). Similarly to favorite levels on inkbunny.

But if favorites aren't supposed to be favorite pictures, for some reason, then IMO it should be merged with sets. +Favorite button could mean to add pic to your favorite set. Sets are better than favs because:
a) Sets can be public or private
b) Pics can be transferred on deletion or not
c) Pics can be arranged in any order, not just by order in which they were added.

Interesting to see all the ideas on this thread.

Personally, I view the score as "objective upvotes," and faves as "subjective upvotes." In other words, when something is technically good, even if I don't like it for whatever reason, I give it an upvote. Whenever I see something that's I like (or want tobookmark for later), regardless of quality or difficulty, I give our a fave. Often times faves also get upvotes, but not always.

Also, it's nice to be able to easily spot a controversial image with this system, since it will have low score but many faves.

Who says the Favorite function is only meant for favorites? I sometimes use the Favorite function to quickly go back to a post to keep an eye on the comments to see if someone is arguing, spamming, or changing tags after an admin said not to.

So you say that when you want to keep an eye on post:
a) you also give it automatically +1 to score? (Do you vote it down to balance the votes?)
b) you will have in favorites children posts when parent is deleted?
c) you have posts like that mixed with other potential uses you have for favorite function?

instead of making something similar to set #1033? Yeah, this sounds completely intuitive.

Why on earth is this even a problem? Aside from a valid point about the automatic upvote, what does it matter why other people favorite stuff?

I don't have problem with people voting/faving/adding to sets things for any reason. I have problem that OP suggestion is denied because some people on forum are not using favorites as favorites. Seriously, if so many people were using favs as different thing than upvote then searching for order:favcount would not return so similar ordering to order:score. OP is right.

a) Yes I do downvote it
b) Since when will it be deleted due to comments?
c) That's not a problem for me

Why would I go to the Sets tab then spend extra time trying to look through pages to find a certain Set when I can just go to my profile with the faved post on the front page or better yet go directly to My Favorites?

I upvote everything I fave. If I'm faving it then I obviously have some reason to like it. I sometimes upvote things without faving them because I do like it but don't have a reason to fave it. I downvote things that push me the wrong way.

Updated by anonymous

I don't particularly care what policy people follow, I just want to note that I generally get more of what I would consider 'quality' pictures with order:favcount than order:score; order:score seems to also promote memetastic/bandwagon images.

It's interesting that the logical inference following from this ("just because it's upvoted doesn't mean it's good") is directly opposite the policy some people have stated ("Just because it's faved doesn't mean it's good").

I'm with Tokaido and Ko-san. I upvote pictures that I don't feel like faving but feel should get credit. There's no way to enforce how a user uses voting and favorites (other than banning multiple vote abuse). I've never used order:favcount, maybe I should.

Actually I plan on removing the auto-upvote for Privileged+ users since it causes a few problems with fav transferring on the backend, and it's just kind of confusing and unnecessary.

Whoa! I started a full scale discussion! Didn't expect that...

You guys have made this site WAY too complicated on multiple levels. There's just not much I can say about that.

Ah, don't mind me. Carry on.

I don't even think I am using the favorites correctly, I mean I have over 12k favorites just from like browsing through every day and just fav'ing the ones I don't hate. I rarely look at them anyways.

That "complication" is the main reason this site is way better then any other booru
