Topic: Perineum Tagging and Explicit Rating

Posted under General

Hi everyone.

Unsure if this is the best place to bring this up, but I came across a post with the explicit rating found here https://e621.net/posts/3423212?q=ori. The explicit rating appears to be based on that the characters "perineum", the area between the characters anus and genitals, is visible. I'm a bit uncertain of this explicit rating because no genitalia or anus is actually visible or outlined. I'm aware that showing a character's perineum causes it to fall under the explicit rating. However, would this also effectively cause many questionable and safe posts already on the site with a character presenting their butt/featureless crotch/where you can see the area from their crotch to the base of their tail, or perineum, to also be explicit?

Again, sorry if this is not the right place for this, I was genuinely confused from this post and wanted to make sure the rating was correct or not.

Interesting... From what I can tell from the posts I've gone through so far, posts with a visible (and tagged) perineum but lacking other explicit things tend to get uploaded as Questionable, but a few users have been going around changing them to Explicit. I always thought perineum = Questionable, but according to the Ratings Wiki (https://e621.net/help/ratings), they're apparently supposed to be Explicit. Should the Wiki be changed, or is it correct?
EDIT: After looking at more posts, they do tend to get uploaded as explicit, so I guess the Explicit rating is in line with conventional wisdom, mostly. This is excluding featureless crotch characters.

Also, I'm not sure if it really makes sense to tag perineum on characters with a featureless_crotch.

I don't think it does make sense. You can't have a thing between two somethings if those somethings don't exist. Without an anus and genitals (or where genitals used to be as in the case of nullos), there can't be anything between them, even if the analogous tissues are there.

I personally think it's both miss rating due to interpretation of the rule and miss tagging as brought up in the other replies. I've personally thought that tag would be termed explicit if genitalia such as balls, vagina or anus were shown. It doesn't make sense to tag perineum if there are no genitalia for the perineum to be.
To me it's comparable to making an image like this:
