Topic: The 100 Most Popular Pokemons In E621

Posted under General

Hey guys ^^ I recently got curious to know which are the most popular pokemons in the furry community, and since i could find no data, I decided to create a list inspired by it for a close answer. This list is based on the quantity of images each of the pokemons have in their respective tags (as of oct. 24th, 2022)

Updated

Is it necessary to put them all under spoilers? Makes it harder to read since they disappear when not hovering the cursor over each group.

First time posting, still need to figure out the formatting here, I wanted to make one of those collapsible boxes instead :s

Ah. For that, you can use a section:

[section=Title here]Body here[/section]

becomes:

Thank you! Just updated it =]

Some notables:
-From topic #33499, in about 6 months, most of the top 6 stayed the same. However, gardevoir has caught up and replaced pikachu for the #2 spot.
-Charizard dropped out of the top 10, going from #7 to #11
-Vaporeon got into the top 10, going from #11 to #9
-Sprigatito is moving up quick, going from #82 to #67
-Lucario widened its gap to stay in the lead. Going from a 6,344 point lead to a 7,337 point lead.
-Decidueye, hypno, salandit, rattata, mudkip, and zebstrika are newcomers in the top 100.
-Squirtle has dropped out of the top 100.

One issue I've discovered is that OP forgot about variations. Both mega_lopunny and alolan_vulpix should still be in the top 100, and neither have been lumped into the post counts of their base forms.

Huh, good catch. I didn't notice that

I'm shocked that Blaziken isn't ranked higher. So close to cracking the top 10

Yeah, although i'm kinda shocked Mudsdale is quite far away from the top 100, with 500-ish posts, I thought he'd be above Zebstrika

it's kinda interesting to see Goodra so high up, I knew it was a popular pokémon, but damn...
Goodra's always kinda seemed like an outlier for pokémon with high fanart density, it's not a starter, not a legendary, not an eeveelution, not from gen 1 (in fact, it's gen 6, the generation that sold _by far_ the worst out of any), and it's not really the traditional "furrybait" design that cause some to get higher numbers; it's just a tubby slug-dragon that's got slime dripping off of it and it's got more art than Mewtwo and Jolteon. what is the x-factor that makes Goodra so popular? is it just the raw cuteness of the design?

It's thicc and goo-d

Slime, goo, body deformation, and so on are all very popular fetishes that Goodra is ideally designed to satisfy, more than any other species except perhaps Ditto (which is too abstract for some tastes). The thicc thighs don't hurt either.

Amazing how many of these I did not "smash" but tbf I wasn't thinking "what if it was anthro?" when I did that.

Lumping them together would cause some pics to be counted twice.
I checked and this would be updated to current numbers:

New 71. Alolan Vulpix 1612, behind #70 Samurott (who has 1613, so it will be overtaken soon)
New 81. Mega Lopunny 1295, behind #79 Yveltal
New 92. Mega Charizard 1107, behind #89 Growlithe (X+Y combined so not counting it for that reason is OK too)
Mega Lucario 953 (sad), would replace Meloetta (948) for 5th under 1000

I also checked the close races, and since then only Totodile moved up, now tied with Suicune.

I haven't, i purposefully not included them because i wanted to give space to other main pokemons that would've been cut out. Just to have some more diversity.

if there is a script, then I'll mention my main disagreement with the OP list:
Ranking is in some cases not meaningful. Small enough differences should be treated as same rank. For example: audino, flygon. or milotic, poochyena, ditto.

This script also has the problem that it doesn't allow for more than one tag holding the same rank, when for example weavile, charmeleon clearly have the exact same tagging count.

kora_viridian said:
This is a WONTFIX from me. The source is right there; make your own script, with Blastoise and Hoopa!

Fair enough, but it's not going to be me doing that. The code is relatively trivial but I honestly don't care to fix it, it's mostly a matter of 'OP's data doesn't mean what they think it means' for me.

For anyone wondering (just me? OK), this is the list of tags which a) imply pokemon_(species) via some number of steps, b) are not implied by anything themselves, and c) do not imply generation_*_pokemon at any stage (so would not be picked up by the above script):

(EDIT: That last statement is incorrect, these are the tags that do not directly imply generation_*_pokemon. Obviously stuff like autumn_deerling still implies deerling, and generation_5_pokemon from there.)

It's a mixed bag in there, all right. Some tags which obviously deserve to be represented like all the megas and regional forms, some form tags which are barely used in comparison to their parent, and group tags like eon_duo that probably shouldn't be implicated at all.

I also tried the reverse operation - tags which are not leaf nodes on the implication tree, but do imply a generation tag:

In conclusion, it's a mug's game trying to automatically extract useful information out of e621's unreliable and outdated implications database, which is why I applied a hefty dose of manual filtering when I compiled my list.

Updated

22-11-16 was 2 days before Scarlet/Violet. Since then the artists got more attached to Sprigatito (now ahead of Nidoqueen in 58th) and especially Meowscarada (85th, ahead of Totodile) and GEE I WONDER WHY /s

...but literally no others. I would have thought Quaquaval or Floragato would be even half as popular but they're miles behind. Tinkaton has fans but isn't faring any better. And the Pawmi family, Espathra and surprisingly Iron Valiant were basically rejected (Valiant barely beats out Mega Gallade. No one wants to 34 either one)

maschiff currently has only 9 posts, 7 of which were uploaded by me, and it's literally a generic dog. As I've said before, I've never seen a new generation of Pokémon be as comprehensively rejected as this one.

Kind of surprised Charizard isn't in the top 10, even if it just barely missed it.

I'm just surprised they still haven't made a Fire/Bug Pokémon based on the bombardier beetle.

Been working on an update to my original list (planning to collect the final data on the first anniversary next month), and I've just noticed that scolipede isn't included here. Given it was at 86th place a year ago, and provisionally at 82nd place now, I refuse to believe it fell out of the top 100 between those times.
