I found a picture that had a species tag "kirin" and could not figure out what it was for the life of me. Upon clicking the tag it brought up a lot of what seem to be pony/dragon hybrids and upon Googling Kirin I could only find that a Kirin is supposed to be some sort of Asian Deer/Dragon creature. I'm guessing this is more species confusion brought about by MLP, but I feel the tag should be fixed to only include what it actually is?

If i'm not mistaken, kirin can also be used to describe a hybrid mix of dragon/horse, most of the MLP pictures that i actualy have seen kirin be tagged was with spike/rarity child which was made up by someone in the fandom, if you don't restrict that much the kirin tag as being only chinese dragon/horse mixes and put up as any dragon/any equine, i think the fine is ok as it is.

They are still dragon/horse hybrids so that still makes them kirins in my book, but that's only my opinion. it doesn't feel that its hurting anyone, i think.

Kirin, or more accurately but less commonly used Qilin, are a mythological Chinese species that could be best described as a cross between a Dragon and a deer, ox, or horse. They usually lean more toward Chinese Dragon with a helping of horse, and with deer antlers tacked on, but as usual it's up to interpretation from various artists.

So, technically speaking, an MLP pony and Dragon crossbreed would NOT be a Kirin, but it would probably closely resemble one (haven't seen the images in question myself yet). Going by TWYS rules, I could see it going as a Kirin with no reservations, and would probably tag that myself.

Considering kirin is not only the more widely used tag, but the more well-known name for it, I'd rather go with the other way round tbh.

Yeah, Kirin is the common Americanized term, so we should stick with that.

No please :( I understand that Kirin is Americanized, but it's even the English Wikipedia doesn't recognize that as a proper spelling. I say bite the bullet on this one and spell it right, along with an alias so that people who continue to misspell it still get the right results.

I'm pretty sure that we go with whatever is usually the common standard if the "technically correct" term is unintuitive, don't we? I guess it's kinda on a case by case basis, but our seems that's the way we usually go.

Kirin is the only way I've ever seen it in the last 14 years, until this thread.

Qilin... huh, learn something new everyday I suppose. Still would find it weird to see that instead of the former though, but I guess I could adapt in time.

There's less than 10 words (not counting plurals and proper nouns) in English that start with "qi", and they're all loan words (from other languages). Most of the proper nouns that start with "qi" are Chinese names. In other words, it's not a letter combination that comes up very often.
