Topic: Patreon goes DeviantArt

Posted under General

Just go to Patreon and look at any page. It's totally different.

But changing the layout is just a Youtube thing. What's a DeviantArt thing is that they changed their good branding for shitty hip "abstract" branding.

Old logo: https://image.ibb.co/dWTiv5/patreon_logo1.png
New logo: https://preview.ibb.co/cqOu2k/patreon_new_white.png

(Spoilers: It is garbage)

This makes even less sense than when DA did it, because DA is actually an art site and Patreon is a crowdfunding site not specifically limited to art.

Like DA, the new Patreon logo is supposed to vaguely resemble the initials of its site (P).

Like DA, this is done so pretentiously abstractly that those initials are not apparent in the image unless you have already figured out that's what it's supposed to be.

Unlike DA, this is not a well-shaped, well-colored, or well-anything memorable icon to make up for this mistake. It's just two generic shapes with unremarkable, generic "designer" colors, like they sell jeans or something.

They've also switched out their cool elegant lowercase font for generic blocky uppercase font.

I'm just gonna keep using the old branding. We should all do it to force them to go back to it because nobody is recognizing the new branding (the point of branding.)

It took me a very long time to realise that was supposed to be a P. This is awful rebranding.

Looks horrible, I think old one was much better.
When I saw that logo, without context, "Stop Japan" came to my mind.

The logo is too simple. It looks like someone went into Illustrator and dragged out a rectangle and circle and filled it with color. That's it...

At least that logo is much more minimalistic to put onto your artwork if you want to promote your patreon page now.

The only logo I put on my artwork is my signature - if I was gonna put the Patreon logo I would incorporate the design into the work, such as having a character intentionally holding up or wearing the icon to promote the page.

Speaking of Patreon, the patreon tag needs insane cleanup. Tag now contains posts which has source from patreon, posts which only have url to patreon which should be url instead and artists posting stuff which isn't from patreon but they themselves have patreon...

Wiki is completely useless on explaining where tag should be used to.

That can be really problematic with brand recognition now looking at it. At least it's still easy to tell when logo is for deviantart.

That's you then, but if you have looked furry artwork in last couple years, pretty sure you have seen many artist using patreon logo pretty heavily on their artwork. Some even going to level of using the logo as method of censoring.

And some have made it pure business model for themselves, you don't have to know what aspect ratio is or cohesion with anything to get that money and if that is your business, you always have to promote it:

So I was simply thinking that new logo isn't so bright orange to immidiately get all attention, can't be used to censor and is so simplistic it's easier to use it as much smaller icon instead.

I know. It's a disgusting practice I don't join in on.

Hey, maybe they're trying to fix that? Like maybe they think if they make their logo ugly as shit even the most low-down money-grubbing artist wouldn't want to use it as a novelty censor. Good guy Patreon.

If that's the case then I wonder how many artists who don't like the logo change will keep using the old logo as a novelty censor just to spite Patreon?

I'll just go back to my Censaurs.

Unless you already made something and now every piece has to be remade from scratch.

Minimalism (at least and especially) as it's used today is ****ing cancer. Another form of trendy hipster retardation/obsession. Ruinous to everything it touches, sucking all of the creativity/functionality/individuality/logic/usability out of it.

I agree, and I'm a minimalist when I design things. People need to relearn that it's not supposed to be doing less, but doing more with less. If it doesn't work, then that's the bottom line. No amount of optimization is going to sell something that doesn't work. If it ain't fixed, don't break it.

There are plenty of media that use minimalism well such as Limbo, a game illustrated entirely with silhouettes, but that's because they use the minimalism to focus on few important details without distractions.

Patreon's "minimalism" is just getting out of art. It's just a line and a circle... they don't mean anything special together, their simplicity does not focus attention on any important details. It's just dumb.

Pretty much, yeah.

If anything, a lack of minimalism is what tends to be senseless (a jumble of inadequately-unified details/ something that sacrifices function for beauty). I agree this is not minimalism, though, just pointless abstraction.

This is a better example of how to do super-minimal typography.

That new logo would make a good signature for a modern artist.

Or a good symbol to slap on your furry art.

I have no coherent response for how bad that logo is.

So how long until they're repositioned and used like a dildo?
