This is not just for me, but to anyone who is interested in joining Mastodon.
There seems to be a lot of servers, and it can be overwhelming.

There is https://meow.social and https://baraag.net, which I'm leaning on to joining.
But there are no further details on these servers, their content and their rules, and their similarities and differences.

I myself am looking for a server that server that includes human bara, orcs, furries, fashion, and art guides.

Any recommended Mastodon servers to start with for a general furry and human NSFW artist?

The only thing I know about baraag is it basically has... uh, no real rules on content beyond "Don't post IRL stuff". Not heard of the first one, though.

The first one seems to be more furry-oriented and I've seen some artists I follow going there. Though it doesn't have any other details about it.

What happened to Baraag anyway? Anytime I try to register there it takes me to the Mastodon homepage, and or the baraag main page gives me a "something went wrong" error message.

In November 2022, Baraag defederated from every other instance and became invite-only. The instance owner has stressed that this is temporary and not permanent. Their ETA was that it would be back to normal right around today, but it hasn't happened yet. They recommended Aethy (https://aethy.com/) as an instance with similar rules (if you're okay with the casual nudism). Both have some furry content, but it's not the focus of either instance. Both Aethy and especially Baraag have been blocked by a significant number of other instances because lolisho.

I always thought that baraag was Bara-oriented

meow.social is already the best, its an active community and its furry.

This is accurate to my knowledge. Here's Baraag's instance admin's statement. I don't have any other info about the lockdown.

Baraag is a site that is being increasingly viewed as a safe haven for Pixiv artists to upload their uncensored art, particularly explicit art of young characters. Furries know they can upload young non-human art to InkBunny, but I don't know if non-furries have any such equivalent. Thus, Baraag fills that niche. Mastodon is not a good host for art quality (downscales images to 1.6 or 2.0 MP), but Baraag is often the only source for its content. It's a somewhat underground art source/community, especially while it's locked down. Some InkBunny artists also post on Baraag and a scattershot of English-speaking artists whose accounts elsewhere (Twitter, Patreon?) are at risk of sudden termination. Yes, Baraag has some furry artists and other "humanoid" artists.

you can interact with anyone on any server unless those servers block eachother. a lot of servers block eachother though. meow.social doesn't disclose who they block or why, which is a bit cringe, but i've deduced that they block my personal server.

i honestly can't recommend any furry-centric servers, furries are the last type of person i'd trust to handle moderating communities given historical precedent

I have no idea, take what chesapeake said. If you want to use Baraag, just sign up for that site and see which other sites on the fediverse you can interact with.

This is of course pillowfort (example of robot from Fallout series). Seems to get linked to from other furry instances a lot?

Pawoo (furry name I guess meaning paw booru?) guys need to seriously get some moderators on that site. Some people are blatantly breaking rules. Can't recommend unless they fix it. :(

I admit that I browse but don't have accounts at any Fediverse etc. sites, so can't really provide feedback on actually posting there.
