Topic: Artist credit on pastiches

Posted under General

What is the policy on artist credit in pastiches which include no actual art by the referenced artist?

As an example (only minutes old, and the inspiration for this topic), here's a pastiche of the work of Louis Wain by artbyyellowdog:

It's based on an actual work by Louis Wain:

However, it clearly doesn't actually use anything from the original, and was instead more or less drawn from scratch. Despite this, the tags currently credit louis_wain (who has quite of few of his actual works on this site, not just the above) as one of the artists. I'm not sure this is appropriate, but I wanted to get some community feedback before unilaterally removing it (and similar tags on other posts).

If my google search is correct, "pastiche" can be interpereted as "copying a style" or "creatively being inspired by the way another artist".

So wether or not tag an artist whose style you 'copied'... hmm, I would say you should.

Sure, your average artist has an amalgamation of styles, it's unrealistic to expect that, but if an artwork was made with the intent of looking like another artist's, I think it's only fair to tag that artist as well
Either that, or we do like voice actors and just add it on the description, the same way one would cite referenced artworks.

You don't. If it's an original work, you tag who made the work, not who's style it matches or who they were inspired by. "Style" is far too ambiguous to reliably tag, and as an artist's style and inspirations are based on the artists before them, it would be an unending chain of 'in the style of/inspired by'. Many artists also find it rude to have their work compared to another's style that their work just happens to look like. If someone didn't have a direct hand in making the art, they shouldn't be tagged as the artist.

I don't think it should use their actual artist tag because it's misleading and implies they actually made that art piece themselves. I don't think in this case people would actually think Louis Wain was drawing furry cat boys in the 19th and 20th centuries, but it could probably get problematic if it comes to modern, living, artists.

I think louis_wain_(imitation) or something along those lines could be a reasonable tag, but it could be open to abuse. I've seen a lot of negative comments on posts saying something along the lines of "Great, yet another artist that rips off {popular furry artist}'s style" and they might just start tagging it that way too. We do already have stonetoss_(parody).

We also have a inspired_by_formal_art tag, though a lot of those are just references to specific art pieces rather than imitations of a particular artist's style.
