Topic: Shadowbanned from e621 Discord Server

Posted under Off Topic

So at some point during last year, I joined the e621 server on Discord. I wasn't the most active user, and mostly lurked there. It's been quite a while, but I don't remember what happened that caused me to receive a shadowban. I've tried contacting the support once to the email but got no response. So after months, I'm wondering if I can return there. I've had no infractions on this site at all, and I don't remember what I could have done on the discord server that caused this.

What's a "shadowban"? You can't join the server('s waiting room) at all?

It’s basically banning someone from something witu giving them no hints of the action, no messages, emails, or anything

You won’t notice until you look

When I try to, it gives me a forbidden error

You aren't shadow banned; you're normal banned. You posted an entire movie to a chat. What did you honestly expect to happen?

I am not gonna debate the rules of that server, but it is still silly.

Last year, people would upload the entire Morbius movie everywhere on the internet, including some Discord servers that turned a blind eye to it. There was even an entire website that played a pirated copy of Morbius in mp4. I may be slightly biased because I hate capitalism and how it utilizes copyright to suppress creativity, very recently Disney tried to regain control over Winnie the Pooh because the executives and CEOs were not happy that it was going to finally become public domain.

Nevertheless, unless someone is acting disruptive or hateful I don't see the point in banning on a first offense.

OP was breaking the ToS of Discord, which I assume is up to server moderators to, well, moderate. Moreover, e621 server is a "Discord partnered" server, losing that privilege because of some shitposting isn't worth it.

Maybe the e6 discord doesn't want people spamming morbius, or any other movie in their server. Just because idiots are doing it doesm't make it not idiotic or disruptive.

The first thing I have learned in the first grade, "the others do it as well", is not an excuse ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I wish there was a way to upvote forums, but this. A+

I do agree with the other guy that it was silly, though. I'd have to imagine for most people, seeing the movie spammed everywhere and nobody paying attention to it with so much as a warning would set a precedent in one's mind that there is no issue. I would personally just give the person in question a mute for a while or at most a tempban. It's certainly possible to moderate without tearing apart someone with no ill intent on the first offense.

Of course, I don't make the moderation policy there, and as much as someone may feel like a large server is a friendly and welcoming community open to free expression, those with a lot of time spent on Discord should learn at some point that large public servers necessitate only posting the tamest things to avoid the possibility of accidentally breaking one of many rules set in place to avoid the troubles that come with breaking Discord ToS.

Is there a way to appeal said ban? It's been months since the issue happened. At the time I wasn't trying to be a pirate or trying to be the worst person in the world, but I wasn't expecting a full on ban for something like that when it happens all the time.

But it's not my server, if I can't appeal this ban, I'll accept it.

Also, I wasn't expecting to be banned for it, or anything of the sort to happen. I thought "Oh I see other users doing that and nothing bad happen, I'll do it too since it doesn't seem like a big deal!"

Also I agree with this, that’s what it felt like qt the time for me

I can't get the auth bot to go through. Returns a 405[?] Forbidden Error. I think I may have been banned. If so, I'll just move on with my day.

Edit 02/27/23: It's a 403 Error

In my opinion, either the OP should be unbanned, or the people they imitated get banned with him.

There is unequal punishment for the same infraction going on here, that's the problem.

How you know e621 is discord partnered?? I'm really missing out so much in e621 discord.

I don't think e621 is partnered with Discord since it hosts NSFW content. If it was, you would see the "Discord Partner" badge on where the server level/boost count would be (e.g., Fur Affinity Official Discord server).

Notwithstanding, the whole moral of the story here is to actually read point #1 & #2 of the Welcome page on the e621.net Discord.

In this case, leaking an entire movie on Discord would be considered Posting Unreleased Content / Hacking Data Files (as per e6 rules) and breaching the Restrictions on your use of Discord’s services (as per Discord ToS).
