Topic: Should i create a Twitter account?

Posted under General

I sometimes find images on FurAffinity that are relatively low resolution and i think there might be higher quality versions on Twitter. Sometimes there are, but when it comes to NSFW content, it is often age restricted.

Is it worth it to create a Twitter account just to access age restricted content?

If you want to access all sorts of NSFW content on Twitter without any restrictions, then go for it.

If you just want to get the highest resolution possible, ask directly from the artist for the original file if they are willing to share. Saves you all the hassle from waiting for the artist to post it (in its compressed-to-hell form) on their tweet.

Nah, just use Nitter. It not only allows viewing such content without an account, it has a less sucky interface too. A Twitter post or user page can be viewed with Nitter by just changing twitter.com to nitter.net. e.g.

https://twitter.com/nsfw_def/status/1635710462615494656

becomes

https://nitter.net/nsfw_def/status/1635710462615494656

Clicking on images even gets you the full size orig version directly, no URL fiddling needed. The only downside is that, because it uses the public API to get and display the pages, it can get rate limited and not be able to load pages or images for a while. However, there are many Nitter instances, so if one stops working, you can just hop to another instance and find one that's not limited. So if that nitter.net link gets rate limited and can't show the post, for example, you can hop to it on nitter.1d4.us or any other instance that's up.

https://github.com/xnaas/nitter-instances Should probably just use some script that replaces it with a random one from that list?

Doesn't work anymore since about two weeks from now. Various Nitter stances have been falsely displaying any post marked as +18 with a "This Tweet is Unavailable" page. Especially noticeable when it have comments on it >:P

That started happening yesterday, yes. There is a workaround that you can click Search from the user's profile page, then it'll show them there. It was mentioned in their issue tracker. It's not the first time Nitter has failed to show age-restricted tweets, so hopefully it's a simple thing they'll get a fix for relatively quickly.

A huge part of that is that for example, the most popular nitter instance is censored. You can make your own but the API process is leading towards tempting people to start scraping again...

Their GitHub mentioned making a login-based workaround for it, but I have no idea what that means.

It looks like that means the person running the instance will need to get session info for a logged-in user, and give that to Twitter when retrieving content for any and all users on that instance.

https://github.com/zedeus/nitter/issues/829#issuecomment-1501192943
The administrator of the respective instance needs to create a Twitter account, sign in and then put their session information into Nitter's configuration file. This session information will then basically be shared for all users. It's the instance's Twitter account, if you will.

As an end user, you shouldn't need to do anything.

This instance has the patch applied, and indeed I can see this age-restricted post just fine. Though it is very slow, likely as a result of it being the only instance currently supporting it so a lot of people are using it. It should get better as more instances pick up the patch (which isn't currently in the main repo, so it may take a bit).

LOL, barber pole poles.

Obviously yes, make the damn account, it's free, there's no harm in it, and it benefits you. You can view things more easily, reply to posts, like and retweet to help their visibility, and even get recommendations based on what you tend to like. The only part that has a drawback is if you want to keep your Phone number away from Twitter, you won't be allowed to send DMs for some dumb reason; those are only allowed if you verify a phone number.

They make it a pain. Paying taxes is easier for a lot of people. :( Not wanting to reward their emotional manipulation is just a side-benefit of refusing to use it.

Now even Twitter users cant see shit if they pass the "600 posts" limit per day lol.

Please use Pixiv/Inkbunny/Baraag/Aethy instead...

You can't view twitter at all without an account. I think I will. I hate twitter, but I will.

Oh I do plan on using Pixiv, but there are artists who are exclusively on twitter + baraag is blocked where I live.

Not suggesting FA because you will never know when they are making a new stupid rule...

That's why even if we lose so much art I will be happy if Twitter goes down, yes it's great for artists to show their portfolio but terrible for the users to enjoy their art.

But now with all these limitations, lots of dumb bans and even with their own self-ddos is it still worth it?

And man, shame baraag is banned where you live...tried to use an app/program with a built-in VPN or don't want to take a risk? But I think you aren't missing much...

just tried to dm an artist with a followers only account to make their art available on a service that doesn't downscale art to shit, and that got totally ate by a random check that my account got locked so i had to pass an "akron test" which was just to push a button

i only use twitter when absolutely necessary (i.e. looking at shammy tweets) and i'm certianly going to shirk my duties after this jfc

if elon doesn't get rid of the limit, they're gonna move to somewhere else so I wouldn't worry about twitter exclusive artists and needing to make an account. This change literally encourages people to use other sites. He has to rescind this or twitter will die.

Don't give me hope like that.

Wow... just tried it. Twitter.com? Registration wall. You can't even see the profile, yet alone SFW posts.
Nitter instances ? They work but are extremely rate limited, and it seems that Twitter is actively trying to break itself. Privacydev got 429'd due to being too popular.

I misread that as "don't give up hope" at first, directed at Twitter users. ;)
It's not really hope. It's inevitable. Every single platform that does this dies, or gets transformed so much that it's unrecognizable. I mean, technically, there still is an AOL/Compuserve, but their old walled-garden dial-up client is deader than Elvis Presley. Hope would be believing that it won't happen to the next platform.

If someone wanted to be a dick, they could distribute scraping, 600 posts per account, per day. But at that point, Twitter is pretty much dead, anyways. The majority of things that people at e621 would want are either already ripped from the giant dinosaur's jaws, or they are soon getting posted off of Twitter, anyways.

It seems Twitter slightly un-dumbed itself. You can view tweets without logging in, and Nitter seems to be working again.

Nope. Twitter is still redirecting me to the login/signup page. Nitter is giving me a "Your connection is not private" message.

Going directly to a user's main page seems to still redirect to the login/signup page, but specific (non-adult) tweets work. I'm able to see this, despite not being logged in: https://twitter.com/kakuteki11029/status/1676185557834268674. Incidentally, clicking on the username to go to their main page from a tweet brings up the page instead of the login, but shows no tweets (it shows the bio, and just says something went wrong where the tweets should be). This instance of Nitter is fully working (it shows users' main page with tweets, including adult tweets): https://nitter.privacydev.net/SpicyGaiki

Even if current issues get solved, I don't think Twitter is long for this world. They have incredibly incompetent leadership so situations like this will come up again.

Nitter is now giving me a "429 Too Many Requests" message.

Nitter instances have been doing that all along. It's a quota error message. Even verified accounts are very limited now. Oh, and it's because of "AI". LOL, nope, that excuse is nonsense. You don't need a hell of a lot of text samples from them to do something like training Deepl.
