Topic: What happened to all these posts?

Posted under General

I've noticed that a bunch of cream_the_rabbit posts are gone from the site, with them being removed because of a "Character Owner requested removal" takedown made 3 months ago, like in post #2803538. I very much doubt Sega themselves went to the site to request random Cream the Rabbit images be taken down. Why would e621 appeal to what are clearly fraudulent takedowns made by a random third party?

All of the deleted images were uploaded by megakirbs - maybe they were the commissioner of the pieces or something?

If that's the case, I'm surprised that there's no "Uploader Requested takedown", given there's an Editor one. Would clear any confusion on the occasion that it might happen. Otherwise I see this as completely nonsensical.

Uploaders are considered third-party to the image and can't request takedowns of it. Editors can because the image contains their work. Going on faucet's hypothesis, a better reason would be "Commissioner requested removal", which is allowed as long as the image wasn't uploaded by the artist themselves.

It is odd to see takedowns like that, though, where it's listed as "Character Owner requested removal", but all the characters in the image are canon series characters that person definitely doesn't own. I'd just consider it a valid takedown with an error in the listed reason.

I think what's weird is that if that were the case, you'd think that all the other images that weren't posted by them would also be taken down, but no. I guess they can only request it if it's something they uploaded rather than someone else?

Like I can see that they deleted their Inkbunny account as well. I find it weird how someone would drop off the face of the internet and also choose to remove as many traces of the stuff they commissioned off of e621 but not all of it, like I can only guess what would compel someone to do that. It's strange and inconsistent. Oh well, guess there's nothing to do at this point, it just sucks seeing stuff be removed for unexplained reasons.

They can't take it down if they didn't work on it, it doesn't have a character of theirs, and they didn't commission it, or if they don't otherwise have legal ownership of the image. It has nothing to do with who uploaded it.

This goes once again to area of semantics.
We generally have umbrella terms which we can use and copy-paste for faster operations and easier searchability if needed. Basically these are mostly for staff and internal use and secondarily notifying uploader or people getting into individual post what happened.
There's also lot of "artist requested removal" posts where artist was booted from the site and stuff like paid material purge, neither where artist requester removal, but the takedown was simply filed by the site.

Takedowns are handled manually by head admin and verified before pushed through. Because of that all that really matters is that the post was taken down. Only manner where this is necessary to know what happened is that if you are e.g. commissioner and posted your commission and it got taken down, but in these cases you can be in contact with head admin directly, email or takedown form as well to get things reinstated and rechecked.
