Topic: I got called weird

Posted under Off Topic

To make it short i got asked about my general view in all genders, i have a firm belief that everyone is equal and nobody is beneath anyone so i just said that i don’t see genders that i only see people, is that weird?

Everyone's weird in their own weird way. It's normal.

"If I'm as normal as I think I am, we're all a bunch of weirdos." ~ Joe Brainard

Normally i would ignore what i got told irl but this kind of rubbed me wrong, it made me feel awkward for the most part, maybe i should just give people what they want to hear, i was a tad bit confused is all.
Thanks

As in “i don’t discriminate based on gender”?
That sounds reasonable and not-weird to me

Some people believe that in order to make X group equal to Y group(Y group can be singular or multiple), that Y group has to be treated less than X group, or X group has to be treated better than Y group. Which is backwards thinking about equality.
If you treat everyone regardless of gender, race, religion, etcetc as one group called a person, then you are fine in my book. It's not weird, it's normal. Treating others differently over something they can't choose is what is not normal.

My mentality just boils down to animalism: If you are nice to me I'll be nice back, and if you give me food I'll be your friend. Purely based on who people are as a person, rather than who they are physically.

I kind of get what you mean. I dont judge anyone based on their gender casually. When it comes to atractiveness i just like certain features over others. Idc if they are male or female.

Yeah, i don’t go discriminating people, that’s unfair in my opinion

I'd say that when people say things like "I don't see skin color", they tend to use it to be dismissive of the issues that affect minority groups. If you are saying the same thing about gender, it could come across similarly. It would be better to phrase it in a way that doesn't evoke those similarities, like "I respect people regardless of their gender". This will clearly depend on context though.

There are other nitpicks like "is equal" should be "should be treated equally" (since they aren't treated equally in society), but that is probably getting a bit too pedantic since the intent seems pretty clear.

Okay maybe it was the way i worded it then, there was no real harm done in the conversation but i never got called weird because of it, hence why i decided to ask on the forums, thanks everyone and happy E6 browsing :D

This is perfectly normal, are you living in the U.S.A? This gender thing is so divisive over there, it is not a surprise you got called weird for not siding with anybody in particular on this issue.

I don’t live in the US, normally the people i talk with doesn’t touch these kinds of topics that much, it kind of just happened, i decided to voice my opinion in the matter when i got asked, i know everybody is entitled to have their own opinion and that’s fair, what happened was a first for me despite all the time i have lived.

Those can be seen as two distinct concepts, so saying you believe concept 1 means you believe concept 2 is a little odd. It's like saying "I like drawing with pens therefore we must eat pizza tonight." The two things are not directly related.

However if you only said "i don’t see genders i only see people", they could have misinterpreted that as you having some type of face-blindness type social issue with identifying gender cues.

I see, never thought about it that way, whoops

Thing is i mean no harm with my beliefs, i can identify gender cues just fine but when you put it that way i can understand why i got called weird, whoops again, i really need to change my wording or i might end up ticking off somebody eventually.

People who care too much about what's between your legs. That their personality revolves around gender, that their world is about their gender, all they talk about is gender.
They may be the real weirdos.

Or just overly obnoxious and should be tuned out like static.

If one goes about their business and can easily shrug off such bombshell topics like any other. I personally see that person as even more normal than the other who has gender on their mind 24/7 365.
So YOU don't see gender? It's not like you don't care, that's just not your priority in building a relationship with another human being.

That makes you a pretty cool person!

You eventually will regardless of how careful you are with your words. Don't worry about it. Most people are focused on themselves anyway. You might be that weird dude to the person you talked with, but I bet you it hasn't crossed their mind since then.

We are all weird and no one can put someone down.

They simply either do not understand or are ignorant of the subject.

Humans care way, way too much about gender when it's ultimately arbitrary and culturally relative. They're really frustrating and annoying.

While I don't dispute that every gender is equal in value and deserving human dignity, they are still different. So I can see why someone might consider it "wierd" to say you don't see gender.

Also "I dont see [race/gender/whatever]" has been used to minimize the inequalities that certain people experience because of their [race/gender/whatever]. I'm pretty sure that's not how you meant it, but some people may mistake your intentions.

Different in what way? Do you have proof? Bear in mind there's a difference between gender and sex.

I'm not minimizing any inequities - caring way too much about gender includes upholding gender-based oppression.

At any point in this conversation did you say "I don't see gender."? If not, then maybe you're not the one I was talking about. I was replying to the original post.

Not quoting people or stating their name makes it difficult to see who you're replying to.
