Topic: I'm stupid

Posted under General

I just found out that I could upload posts just by putting the link in the source. This whole time I've been saving them to my computer and then uploading them to the site, all 300 of them.

At least I got a pretty kick ass collection now.

Also, yay 300 uploads.

It only works with a direct image link, and some files occasionally will be uncooperative. But yeah, it is a handy trick to know about. Until someone else told me about it, I thought I had to save each one to my harddrive too though, so I suspect a lot of people may not realise you can do that.

So THAT'S why some of ippiki's sources have the d.facdn link! Now I know!

The funny thing is that I will probably just keep saving them anyway.

Well that's one reason. Another reason is that the direct image link gives us a record of the original file name. Which can be handy if the source breaks/deleted and you're doing research and image searching to find more about it. If it's a FurAffinity direct image link (as one example), it often includes a few key words and the original FA uploader's name (so character owner/artist usually). I know Munkelzahn (one of our janitors who's really good at tracking down sources) really likes it when the direct image link is included, because it includes a few key pieces of information and because of how useful it can be years later on to have that. So, that's why we ended up getting the ability to add up to 5 source links, to keep everyone happy instead of having to choose just one of them. lol

Yeah, I know what you mean. Half of the time I save it anyways just because I thought it was that awesome.

Man, I thought that everybody else used the direct link and I was just making extra work for myself. Like I said I kind of like having them on my computer I got them nicely organized by artist.

I told two people about this feature a couple weeks ago, you can take a wild guess at which two it was.

There is something even better, the almighty bookmarklet.

Create the bookmark linked in the link, open image in browser you want to upload, click the bookmark, get directly linked to the upload page with the image already set as the source. Saves a couple clicks.

I wasn't aware of this either. :/

I actually keep a seperate folder around where I dump all the stuff I want to upload, and periodically empty it so I don't have to search for the right thumbnail for minutes on end (since the file names are usually gibberish).

This direct link thing would be a bit easier to use, though there's a trade-off in that you'd have to keep switching between two tabs while tagging, since it doesn't show a preview this way.

Sounds sweet, will try this out!

It still shows the preview. :V

It should show a preview of the first image URL entered into the Source field, assuming the File field is empty.

To show the preview, hit Enter after pasting the url. It has to be the first one in the list from what I've gathered.

Same here o.o;;; i didnt know that XD

... Huh. I TOTALLY knew about this. Yeah, I'm not learning about this right now for the first time, not even a little bit.

Just seems as bothersome to get the direct image link as it is to save the image on your PC. It's a neato function, but I probably won't use it.

Updated by anonymous

Huh. Guess I might try uploading a few things now.

Tried it, you're right. O,o I didn't even need to hit enter, by the way. Showed up immediately when I pasted the URL.

I guess I didn't ever discover it on accident because I never use direct image links as one of my sources (I find it to be pointless), and on second thought: that will be the reason I'm probably not going to use this after all.
Especially since it needs that URL to be the first source in line in order to work, both the preview and the upload-via-source-instead-of-file trick. I want my primary source (the one visible without highlighting) to be an artist or submission page, not an image link.

Still though, it's a neat little thing.

I do that, and after posting, switch them to their right order. It would be neat if the image still showed up regardless of the order

By which point you might as well just upload it from your PC, at least if your files aren't hard to retrace. I mean, they're both busywork.

Agree, but unless you could program it to only use the first image link it sees (from top to bottom) and discard the rest, it could potentially bug out if you would (for some reason) put links to multiple images in there.

I think. Perhaps a bit far-fetched. :|

A bit, but it's okay because I tend to forget to add some tags

Maybe. If it could take only the first image on the list, though

Hmmm, as do I. Then perhaps this isn't such a bad idea after all. The difference being that I'd just remove the image link instead of repositioning it, which shouldn't make a difference by then.

I've gotten in the habit of doing it like this:

  • Link to main artist page
  • Link to individual post (bare minimum for sourcing IMO)
  • Direct link to image

From this you can usually dig up at least some information from google, et al. Some artists can be quite a pain though. :P

Updated by anonymous

  • Link to submission page (artist)
  • Link to artist profile page
  • Link to submission page (commissioner - assuming there is one and he/she has it uploaded, repeat below if there's more than one)

That's mine most of the time. Sometimes I'll get a bit OCD and put in links to the artist's submission page on various galleries. I'm just weird like that.

This is exactly what I do

I generally do it in this order :P

I've been uploading images "the hard way" (by saving them onto my hard drive and having the source open on a separate window), and I've just reached 430 by doing it as so.

I'll keep this in mind the next time I'm able to upload more. It'll save me some time and skip a redundantly unnecessary step.

It works with FA, but not Pixiv. It will work with most InkBunny pictures, but sometimes you'll have to replace https: with http: (which trick doesn't work for pixiv btw).

I've been using that trick on here and tumblr since day one.

Updated by anonymous

Mostly it just doesn't work for (mainly explicit) images that you have to log in to view. I've never tried changing https to http though, I'll have to play with that one.
