just search whatever tag you're looking for and you'll get an exact number.
EDIT: why do we even truncate numbers under 10k, actually? like, "1.2k" is the same amount of characters as "1234".

Also, it shows the exact count in the tag's wiki in the header; just click on the ? in a post's tags list.

1.0k is more readable than 1000 (which can be confused for 100 or 10000 at a glance), and the exact number isn't terribly important most of the time. Both the search and the wiki page header shows a more exact count if you really want it.
