Reason: The name Luffy is considered a mistranslation

cinsidered by who? is the name "Ruferu" used in any official localized media or anything? got any sources?

I can confirm "Luffy" is bullshit, I've spoken privately about this before.

Not formally making an alias request just yet because the circumstances around this character might change (Persona 5: The Phantom X hasn't released yet, none of the promotional materials provide a usable name/transliteration besides the very-obviously-a-codename "Cattle", people generally do understand who you're talking about if you say "Luffy from Persona 5 X", "Luffy" technically arose from a machine translation error, nobody is particularly stressed about settling on a single definitive name just yet), but just for the sake of argument: is there currently an obvious "best" tag name for this character?

To explain the possible names for this character and their etymology:
"Lufer"/"Ruferu": based on the Japanese ルフェル, Chinese equivalent is 路菲尔 (Lu fei er), this is a Chinese game based on a Japanese series and Shigenori Soejima's still doing character art/design, so skipping the Chinese name seems to make sense. Likely related to "Luficer", which is ルシフェル (Rushiferu) or 路西菲尔 (Lu xi fei er).
"Cattle": Phantom Thief codename. Of these options, this is the only one to actually be written in Latin alphabet in promotional materials.
"Luffy": The One Piece character's name is transliterated as 路飛 (Lu fei), and there's probably various texts where people misspell it as 路菲 (Lu fei), which may explain how this particular error occurred.

Personally, I like "Lufer" because that's what the *intended* name appears to be, but it's not commonly used and it's definitely the most *transformative* name option by far.

Confusingly, Danbooru uses luffel_(p5x)!? Gelbooru uses luffy (persona 5: the phantom x), Sankaku uses luffy_(p5x).

there's a youtube playlist of the game with subs (they use "Luffel" there) but the uploader openly admits to using DeepL, which is the exact nonsense that got us "Luffy" in the first place, so I would really like to not use Luffel.

Updated

Bumping to say that progress has started on a playable translation of Persona 5 X.

It's very obviously mechanical in nature with translations being fetched from an online service, and in several places the hanzi are all read individually ("Amamiya Ren" becomes "rainpalace lotus".)
Depending on what kind of progress the mod receives (in particular, they should probably be hardcoding known names/strings), and how much attention the mod receives from players/fans, we might want to adopt the mod's translation as an authoritative name.

Any kind of estimate for how long that'll take?

None. P5X's status as a live service game means that there'll always be more to translate, the modders are all enthusiast volunteers so they don't have to meet any kind of deadline for translation progress, my prior post assumes they're willing to be as much of a stickler about names as I am, and there's no guarantee that the game finds popularity with the anglosphere since there's already a wealth of fully-playable gacha.
