Topic: Ethnicity in furry art

Posted under Art Talk

understand that I m an african american, I love to draw, and I don t see many drawings of the ethnic groups in furry artwork.... well... some I do. But I would love to draw more of them.

There are literally rainbow sparkledogs, color has never been an issue. If you want to go into ethnicity, it is almost impossible to establish ethnicity solely based on images of completely fictional anthropomorphic characters.

cool, i'll do that now, and agree with you, it really is difficult to establish ethnicity on anthros

There is some if you think about it. African Wild Dogs come from Africa, same for Fennec foxes. Red Foxes are most commonly known from Europe, and Bengal Tigers are from southern Asia, etc.

It really depends on where they are, but Moon Moon is right, ethnicity is hard to define on a anthropomorphic animals. There's just so many with many origins.

I try to stick what I know is best. For example, I draw humans sometimes, so maybe I should stick with that until I grasp the knowledge of what ethnicity an anthropomorphic animal should be.

.. you can assign whatever ethnicity you want based on whatever logic you want, but you really, really shouldn't expect other people to pick up on that. For example, Huskies == Alaskans? Sure, that makes sense. But most people won't make that connection unless you shove it in their face. They'll just be like: 'Oh, a husky. I like huskies.' or whatever.

IOW there is no 'what ethnicity an anthropomorphic animal should be'. There is 'what ethnicity makes sense to me for an anthropomorphic animal to be'. It's fantasy, there's not really much reason to expect others to pick up on your particular reasoning unless it is an extremely strong argument.

Anyway go draw some stuff :)

psst, you should read blacksad books. the main character is poc.

You seem to have a penchant for feet; perhaps you could try drawing them with footwear specific to their culture.

I'm black too but you don't see me complaining about lack of "diverse" art.

ordinarily i would go into a long post about how putting a headdress on a fox person isn't "authentic," it's cultural appropriation at best and casual racism at worst

but this is e621 and its userbase is furries

so ಠ_ಠ

(also it's not 'aztec,' it's 'nahua.' not all germans are nazis. most scots would punch you in the beanbag for calling them brits.)

Hard to distinguish race of a furry (Not species mind you) Because fur can be of any color in pictures. So having a black fur coat means nothing really, it just has black fur. They're not divided into a subculture because of it (black furrys vs white furrys) Especially because most have multiple colors. And let's not even get started on the glowing ones.

Costumes are the only real way to display race or ethnicity in a furry (As seen in the giant collage above)

That being said, *cough* my profile pic *cough*

personally, stuff like tribal markings, loincloths, tooth necklaces and the like are more like novelties than indicators of race or background

and they're pretty fucking hot. guilty pleasure

Within the context I'd probably go with edgy over brave, but definitely not euphoric. It doesn't have enough fedoras to be euphoric.

I'd go as far to say that it was a bit redankulous, bordering on 100% pure Colombian euphoria.
