Topic: [REJECTED] qr_code -> meta

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The meta category makes sense for QR codes that are just serving links to an artist's website, but what about QR codes that actually appear in an image, like the example below?

Such images are the overwhelming minority of the QR code tag, but they do still exist.

Adopting web_browser alongside in-universe URLs would probably cover most of those edge cases, though there aren't really uses like that yet.

Not sure if it's as easy to do the same for qr_code - qr_code phone is a fairly good search, but there's also qr_code sign.

(I only glanced over url sign and url billboard but didn't spot any in-universe uses for URLs there, except post #641635 I guess.)

But either way URLs and QR codes are both almost always things you can interact with in real life, as the person viewing the art/comic. Feels like it'd qualify as meta to me.

if the barcode isn't a meta tag, then i don't see it needs to be changed? there are also logos like patreon_logo isn't meta either

if something is a object/subject within an image it should be tagged under general.

meta tags are for the file's metadata (dimensions, resolution, filetype), visual/stylistic elements of the image itself (medium, chromatics, artifacts), describe the function of features/elements within a piece (language, url, watermark), or describe something else about the post page (translation status, *_at_source, *_in_description).

Does QR Code not fall under that?

the text language tags and url describe what text contained within an image is, and watermark essentially denotes when a part of an image's visual content is non-diegetic.

qr_code is a fairly rigid concept, it's a thing. you could potentially have a QR code-related meta tags (*_at_qr_code), I guess, but on its own a QR code isn't a meta element.

QR codes are non-diegetic 99% of the time

it's still a thing, though, a single element.

meta tags like that are closer to modifiers for other tags, rather than their own things.

I like this analogy (and how you contextualized it with text). text itself is a general tag, languages and url modify it with outside context. Whereas stylized_text, blue_text etc are still general tags - visual descriptions of the text as a thing, not non-visual descriptions of the non-diegetic context the text is reflecting. Worth comparing that character_name, artist_name etc are meta tags.
