Topic: Why are upvotes rarer than faves?

Posted under General

I thought it'd be the opposite way around. Faves are public, upvotes are private. Faves have a max cap, upvotes don't (though granted it's a super high cap).

Especially on posts with, let's call them "niche fetishes" that will attract more downvotes, people who fave don't always give an upvote to counteract the downvotes and will let a highly faved post fall into a negative score.

I always apply both and used derpibooru before coming here which automatically upvotes a post when you fave it, so just wondering what's stopping people from upvoting posts they fave.

Upvotes have an hourly limit, no? That's probably what is causing this behaviour.
Also I tend to find that favs are rarer than upvotes on the posts I upload, which is interesting

Edit: Huh, upvotes for posts may not have an hourly limit.

Favourites serve the purpose of tracking images you enjoy. Up votes do nothing aside from telling people you like it.

You can track images you upvoted with votedup:

suggesting that voting rate can be also affected by downvotes, it's just going to be a feeling that it's absent from voting.

Yu can favorite without going into aan image, you cant upvote without going into an image's page first.

Shouldn’t it be the opposite? This is a little counter-intuitive

True, but I'd say more people don't know that than do. It's less convenient as well considering there's space on your profile dedicated to viewing your favourites

...you can? Also I feel like e621 should take derpibooru's lead and auto-upvote-on-favorite. I feel as though it would help boost those posts that have a niche kink that not everyone may like that doesn't deserve a low or negative rating. It would also keep bad quality posts at bay since most wouldn't be favoriting those.

I upvoted a load of posts in a short time a few weeks ago (stuff I'd uploaded but not voted on) and didn't run into it, maybe there is one but it's pretty high and more an API rate limit thing.

And yeah I should've brought up how safe pics & explicit memey posts usually have equal or slightly more votes than faves, but not the same level of difference explicit posts normally have.

As a test, there are 77 posts with less than 1000 faves and over 800 score. Meanwhile there are 27.5k posts over 1000 faves but under 500 score (and if isparent:false removes posts that have inflated fave counts from a merge, the result is 18k posts)

It's been suggested before, but the response wasn't very favorable. Primarily because some people like to use upvotes and favorites for different thing, not everything they favorite they want to upvote, and it could be a hassle to remove the upvote for the things they favorite. Though this does go to show how arbitrarily people use upvotes vs favorites.

That just makes me think of this xkcd.

Not sure if we should avoid making changes just because some people are using the way it works now in a way it wasn't really intended to be used.

e621 did once do this, but it was specifically only for users ranked privileged and above. It personally bothered me because I liked to use favourites and upvotes for different things, and I ended up just being forced to upvote everything.

There was also a bug that allowed the priv+ users to upvote an image twice by first upvoting it and then favoriting it, which was pretty much just treated like a feature at the time. I don't remember when that got fixed, if it was with the upgrade to e621ng or some time before that.

They do, it's just ridiculously high
like, 3000/hour ridiculously high (shared between both up & down)
They also aren't bound by the typical api limit (that 60 you see on your profile)

There's a slight difference between up & down, you can upvote the second you make an account, but downvoting needs an account at least 3 days old

If you're interested in seeing some other funky limits, I have a list here (as far as I'm aware, it's up to date)

Huh interesting list.
Though I'm not sure if the exceptions to the favourites limit is a comprehensive list since I don't see Crocogator on there

snpthecat said:
Oh so they're above the cap and can't fav anything extra. Though why wasn't the cap raised for Crocogator and the three others? Or is it that they've never gone above 80k and the number is inaccurate?

No, just as Earlopain said in that screenshot, they were already above the 80k limit for normal members, the ones that have raised limits were not above their level's limit

Crocogator was above the 80k limit when it was originally instated years ago, so nothing changed with the most recent equalizing of favorite limits

Well there's "favorite/unfavorite" modes and a "favorites" button, but your upvotes have neither of those. (New feature? nudge)

For me, upvotes are for SFW pics and faves for NSFW (easier access), with a small handful that get both. This is fine because I'll never be in the same league as those with 80k favorites. (I only have like 8k)

Oh, hey, this thread is discussing me!

Anyways, all i know is that score ≈ faves/2, and posts with entertaining dialogue can get lots of upvotes. When I translate something, I sometimes pay attention to the score-to-favorite ratio some time later, and if it drops significantly under 1/2, I get irrationally paranoid it's my fault. It's probably not a very good system.

I literally am unable to upvote when connecting through Tor. I would put upvotes over favorites if I could.

why dont you use a set instead?

They do exist, they're just arbitrarily restricted to privileged users, for some reason

i second that

A hassle? All you have to do is un-upvote it when you favorite it.

It doesn't bug me when I use derpi and upvotes don't do anything other than increase the score.

Another reason might also be that the favorite button is simply bigger. I learned about the votedup: search function quite early. As a result my favorites are basically upvotes, while upvotes function as favorites.

Doing both requires more user inputs than just hitting favorite, which already accomplishes the goal of marking a post for later reviewing.

If there was a short cut to browsing your upvoted posts similarly to the favorites button under posts, the behaviour might change.

Downvotes count against upvotes. Also, not everyone upvotes posts they favorite.

But why wouldn't they? There's no incentive not to.

bdanimare said:

but simultaneously, there's also not much of an incentive to. favs are public, make a visible number go up on your profile, and also go into an easily browsable list that's sorted by date faved. voting on a post only really changes the visible score on a post which only serves a purpose for other users, really.

bdanimare said:

I don't know why, but a lot of popular posts have about twice as many faves than upvotes.

I up vote most things that I like or think look decent. I favourite things that I like so much, that I'm sure I will want to see them again some time. And lastly I have a special set where I put things that I love. I regularly look at these categories to maintain them. I wish the process could be simpler, such as using a 5-star rating system. Having to type 3 completely different things into the search is a little annoying. (In fact my personal/private/local database uses a 5-star rating system.)

I don't bother making distinctions such as "only SFW gets up voted and only NSFW gets favorited" because I can just include rating:e in the search, or whatever other tags I want. If I ever actually want a separate category of bookmarked posts, I will just make a set for them. Since tagging is the biggest strength of this website, that probably won't happen anytime soon.

Anyway, us normal users can't do anything other than guess why there are more favs than up votes. The one-click favouriting mode probably has a very big impact. But also, how often do people down vote? It's not like old YouTube where it shows you the exact ratio; we only get to see the difference between up and down votes.

So why not have upvotes just automatically be added like with derpibooru?

Posts being unfairly downvoted for its content is a good reason why upvotes should be automatic

Gah... it drives me crazy how many people favorite without upvoting. You'd think that would be common courtesy, if you like a pic to help it not be in the negative score zone.

Because, yannow, posts with a red score number are a whole lot less likely to be clicked on and upvoted, leaving them nearly always permanently stuck there.
