Absolute beautiful masterpiece! Perhaps the best video game I've ever played--the best single-player game at least. Yet, I never could be bothered to beat the final boss for the good ending, tbh.

I'm currently playing it, nearing the end, and feeling an 8/10 or 9/10 so far. Overall, it's a fantastic experience with rewarding exploration and good movement. My main complaints are excessive backtracking, some inconvenient fast travel points, and a wall jump that can feel a little too finnicky for a platformer. The checkpoints feel reasonable if you're thorough in exploring to find them, and the healing system is very generous most of the time.

The hype surrounding Hollow Knight made me worry that it was being put on a pedestal as an indie darling, but no, it's genuinely great. Just be mindful that the game doesn't respect your time as much as it could. It's a Metroidvania through and through, and the large map and constant influx of new abilities means that thorough players could find themselves backtracking through easy areas again and again to find extra goodies.

i loved hollow knight i beat basically everything, but i haven't played the game since 2022. really it's just hard to get back into the flow due to it being so hard, however, my muscle memory prevents me from starting a new save file and not find it too easy or getting bored and giving up in crossroads. great game absolute masterpiece but i can't play the game anymore just due to me being too good for the early game to feel fun but not having the polish to do the late game again.
