Topic: what are some best practices for asking and artist permssion to reupload their work onto e6?

Posted under General

i've asked artists if they're cool with their art being on this site before and they always and up pretty amicable, but sometimes i do feel like it could always go smoother. any advice or best practices for asking permission?

another thing i want to get better at is asking for higher resolution work. i know that plenty of artists sell hi-res versions of their art and uploading those would count as paywalled content, i'm not talking about those artists, i'm just talking about artists who have most of their stuff on twitter or a similarly awful image host that almost necessitate a direct source
the only time i've ever asked for hi-res art was from schmutzo and they told me to just grab from their twitter and furaffinity (which i already had problems with since the quality of image between the 2 were different from eachother and inconsistent, hence me asking them in the first place)

I don't exactly have a template I use when asking, since I always feel the need to write something a little more personal to each.

The key things I try to mention are:

  • Where I want to repost it (e621.net, obviously)
  • An assurance that they'll be credited, along with source links back to the work and their galleries
  • I only intend to post their freely available content (if they have paywalled content)
  • Asking if they have any other galleries where they post their work (which I'll link to on their artist page)

I also try and include a nice comment about their art too, the vast majority of artists I upload for is because I enjoy their work after all.

Be direct about your intentions, state what you want to do and what would they expect from you. Ideally, make the note short and concise.
You can see some examples of email templates that I have posted here.

  • 1) Ask whether they could share the hi-res or original resolution file through email, Discord, or cloud service (e.g., Google Drive, Dropbox).
  • 2) State that the aforementioned sources are notoriously unreliable for getting the hi-res files for the purpose of reposting here (link the sites and sources page from e6).
  • 3) Mention that posting inferior quality artwork here is bad practice, so you have to either search for the highest quality version from their multiple galleries or ask for them directly.
  • 4) Most importantly, respect the artist's decision if they do not want to share the original files directly to you.
  • 5) If they do commissions, you can ask whether or not you are allowed to request the original files from the commissioners, should they be okay with the repost as well.
