Topic: Solution for "Invalid source" on WebM posts

Posted under General

If you are using Internet Explorer 9 or higher, and are unable to view WebM content (you get an "invalid source" error), download and install this software to fix it:

https://tools.google.com/dlpage/webmmf/

In the next update, an error bar will pop up under the video with this information when it fails to load, so this forum post is just to inform you guys about it before then.

I'm using my IPad mini, if I come across this problem again, how will I solve it through tablet?

Get an Android

I'm actually running on an android OS; Videos here just don't seem to play on it for whatever reason. I don't think .webm files are supported, but it could just be my particular device and/or android OS.

Sony Xperia M (C1905), Android 4.3, running Chrome 37.0.2062.117.

Yeah, it's probably my phone & version since the OS is still around 2.2. The phone itself is a little dated, as well.

Getting an android would definitely help in playing the files.

However, safari should play it directly on factory settings (according to apple), are you using safari?

I have both, Puffin browser AND Safari.

You could play it via QuickTime plugin on Mac at one point, though I've no idea if it works in the current implementation of QuickTime...which from what I've gathered isn't very plugin-friendly.

iOS however has never directly supported webm (without a compatibility layer bundled in an app at least). I know some websites like gfycat actually encode in multiple formats for browser compatibility (webm, h264, etc.) and that may have confused things.

More then positive hes talking about the ps4 console.
Just last year xbox360 wouldn't let you log onto e621.
Ps3 stopped loading e621 altogether.
Just last month the ps4 allowed us to log on to e621.
Trust me, im sending this reply using my ps4. (( god forbid if the xbone lets you also ))
All i know is the error is caused (possibly) by the way e621 does its loading for anything saying "download"

Updated by anonymous

With my iPad and sine i upgraded it to iOS8 I can't go to e621... It says me: The operation couldn't be completed. Protocol error.
I'm very sad about that, but if you have the same problem, use Chrome as browser. Now I can go to e621! Yay!

??

You can have multiple sources for video in a video tag. Make one be WEBM and other be MP4.

Alternatively use Flash Player as fallback. Flash is integrated into IE since version 10.

YouTube supports all three, please inquire how they determine what the browser support and deliver appropriate content regardless.

Two final thoughts
1. Requiring a 3rd party plugin is bad (JAVA plugin comes to mind)
2. Microsoft is moving away from supporting IE plugins

Thanks.

And maintain duplicates for every file?
How about no?

So, 3rd party plugins are bad unless they're that special little snowflake/clusterfuck from Adobe, which apparently stops being 3rd party by simply being bundled.

Give e621 a tiny bit of Google's infrastructure resources and maybe it won't be ridiculously wasteful having a dozen duplicate files per video like they do.

2. Microsoft is moving away from supporting IE plugins

And you, along with everyone else, should be moving away from using IE. Don't validate their sociopathic behavior by demanding support for their flawed-by-policy products.

Instead of bitching that e621 isn't duplicating their video storage load to satisfy the whims of an anti-free formats MPEG-LA co-conspirator, how about you give Microsoft the shit they duly deserve for refusing to support webm?

Well actually if you use a modern browser - no, you need only MP4. All browsers support MP4, even Firefox (minus proper MSE support).

Flash is first party extension now and was since Windows 8 release (not sure about 7). It is part of the OS. Note this site has flash files on it. Mind you, unlike the browse you use, Flash on IE / Modern IE works flawlessly.

Not wasteful. Google has videos which work on a variety of network speeds. Very useful. I don't expect that though from a fetish porn site. I do expect not to have to install 3rd party plugins, toolbars, and desktop assistant monkeys.

You seem to be under the impression that IE is bad, Google is god almighty can't do no wrong, and Chrome/Firefox are awesome. Reality check, you are living in the prehistoric times.

Sorry but I prefer to give Google shit for pushing its agenda with an inferior codec.

Firefox on GNU/Linux doesn't support h264 out of the box.
It can use gstreamer to provide h264 support, but that requires gstreamer and an h264 gstreamer plugin to be installed on the system, which is a legal liability in countries that observe the lunacy of software patents.
All of this because h264 is patent encumbered, unlike VP8, which can (and is) fully supported in Firefox proper, and doesn't depend on the operating system implementing it.

Flash is still developed by Adobe, not Microsoft, so it's a third party IE plugin.
Bundling it doesn't change that fact, and doesn't make Flash a more valid plugin than any other IE plugin.

And nobody is telling you to install some gaudy nagware plugin like you're implying.
All that plugin does is add the missing webm support to IE. It's many orders of magnitude less intrusive and less of a security liability than Flash, which you're admittedly A-OK with. You won't even know it's there after installing it, other than the fact that webm will work.

You seem to be under the impression that IE is bad,

IE's proprietary/patent-encumbered codec-pushing agenda is bad. It's all the reason needed to boycott and shun its usage. Its technical performance and stability have no bearing on this.

You seem to be under the impression that (...) Google is god almighty can't do no wrong

I am far from siding with Google on every aspect, but their push for free formats on the web is certainly deserving of my approval and support. If the roles were reversed, I would be on Microsoft's side.

You seem to be under the impression that (...) Chrome/Firefox are awesome

Firefox is awesome.
Chrome is technically admirable, but I don't like some of its design and development policies.
I use the free version, Chromium, but to a lesser extent.

Reality check, you are living in the prehistoric times.

Reality check: you have Microsoft's dick in your mouth and are starting to grow on its taste.

Sorry but I prefer to give Google shit for pushing its agenda with an inferior codec.

VP8 is not an inferior codec.
The only things h264 has over it are installed base, number of deployed hardware decoders, and slightly more mature software implementations (on account of its age). All of those factors are subject to change.

In any case, it shouldn't matter.
As long as h264 is patent encumbered, it should not be accepted as a web technology.

The web must be kept free, and none of its fundamental technologies can be allowed to be subjected to the legal whims of some private interest association.

Microsoft is part of the MPEG-LA, which is the real season why they push for h264 and against VP8 on the web: so they can have power over competing web video implementations.
Supporting their agenda because of some slight and temporary technical convenience is nearsighted and grossly irresponsible.

Linux based operating systems for x86 end users are usually an opt in experience. That is you buy a Apple or Windows x86 system and install your favorite linux distro on it.

You problem is your own doing; no one asked you to use a freeware operating system without modern media playback capabilties.

Why Firefox and Linux are inferior can be split into its own thread (offtopic).

The proposed plugin solution is quite flawed, just like any plugin or vendor specific extension solution is.

Feel free to ask Microsoft to start supporting a format they don't have to pay royalities for, and is easy to implement, until then we use free alternatives.
Also IE11 still ignores simple html standards and requires pages to be 'optimized' to actually make anything more than some pictures show up, if you come to a gun fight with a cucumber as a weapon prepare to get flak for it.

I just tried it on Windows 8.1 and it crashes every time. I haven't tested it on any other sites though.

Edit: It happens on any website with webm. The plugin probably needs to get updated by the developers to accommodate some change that Microsoft made to IE.
