Topic: is downvoting art against rules?

Posted under General

in the code of conduct, it says that downvoting art because you dont like the contents of it is against the rules and is abuse of site tools. did i read it right?

if so then whats downvoting even for?

The exact wording is:

Do not indiscriminately downvote posts based on their content. Blacklist the offending subject matter instead.

Indiscriminately is an important keyword here. We aren't going to bash you for just downvoting a few posts, when it becomes a pattern is when it becomes a problem.

yea i see now, i didnt get the context of that word at first.

If you can blacklist something, do that instead of downvoting the posts containing it. Especially if it's related to anybody's identity or some other real world issue. From what I've read in other discussions that seems to be where people run afoul of this rule.

Yeah, Pretty much.
Downvoting isn't a problem, Feel free!
But, Mass downvoting, like going to one artist
or topic and downvoting every single post,
instead of using a blacklist, is a problem.

One is expressing an opinion, the other is more
or less targeting that gunks up the place, when
a quick line in the ol' blacklist would do, Dood.

Is it something you could blacklist? Don't downvote. Does it just suck? Take it down to the downvote city where the farts are green and the art is shitty.

The rule is basically that you should vote on art by it's quality rather than if you like or dislike the fetishes or characters in it.

Downvoting is meant to be used for the quality of the post, not the content of the post. Of course, we enforce artistic quality standards here, so anything that’s really bad just gets deleted. But there are other kinds of quality too - maybe you think the dialogue is bad, or the character designs are poor even if technically well-drawn, or anything else like that. Maybe the art is just kinda cursed but it’s not due to any particular tag that you can easily blacklist. Of course, these things may also just be one artist’s style, in which case you should blacklist the artist instead of downvoting all of their posts.

The point is that searching by score is supposed to function as a quality filter - add order:score to any search to see what posts the community thinks are the best. It isn’t really fair to the posts that contain more controversial subjects if everyone who doesn’t like that particular subject can just downvote it. Downvote because the post doesn’t meet your standards, not because you dislike the content.

Woe be to those who downvote. A great, and terrible curse be upon all who press the button.

Ye work will delete right as you’re about to export it, losing the entire file.

Every time you turn into somewhere with ye vehicle, ye shall be cut off by some random suburban from thin air.

Every upload ye try will be reported and taken, cause someone will always have gotten it right before ye.

Finally, right when ye think you can’t take no more, your ass falls off.

the original poster said they get it why are we still going

The only other thing to add I think is that if you're concerned about a potential pattern in downvotes on posts or comments that you suspect may violate the rules, you can report one of the posts/comments and request a mod check if there's any suspicious patterns in the voting. I did so the other day, actually.

If there is, they'll get bonked, but even if there isn't, you're not gonna get in trouble for just asking about it.

Both work fine, the only real difference with them is your votes are always private regardless of your settings
voted:me votedup:me voteddown:me

voteddown:me just makes me realize how often I accidentally downvote...
