Topic: Is the "I am the original uploader and I uploaded this by mistake" flag option gone?

Posted under General

I think I remember that a while ago, there used to be an option when flagging a post to choose ""I am the original uploader and I uploaded this by mistake", is this correct?

I remembered a few times in the past when I've uploaded something I noticed an error with that I needed to rectify, or when I've accidentally posted an artists work and that post got automatically tagged with DNP, or when I've accidentally uploaded an earlier draft of an animation rather than the newer one... there used to be an option to just flag that post as "oops I made a mistake and I am the original uploader, please delete this submission"

Yet I don't see this option any longer among the options for flagging a post. Is this a deliberate decision that was made or am I having some weird ass mandela effect memory of this, or am I just not seeing where you put this option?

It's only applicable for the first 2(?) hours after posting a post

That makes sense but I could swear I didn't see that option earlier today when I posted a fix to an upload I made less than half an hour earlier when I flagged it. (I chose the option to flag it for being an inferior version of the new post I posted afterwards, but I was still confused why I couldn't just flag it for being removed right away due to being the original uploader)-

From what I understand, it was removed some time ago because people didn't understand what it was for, frequently using it when one of the other reasons should have been used. In essence, it was just too confusing.

Wasn't that option removed a while ago? Around the time of e621ng/the site rewrite?

That option always seemed a little weird to me, since uploaders aren't otherwise able to have posts deleted. But for some reason they can if it's soon enough after upload? If the artist is DNP, it can be flagged for deletion (if you're the uploader and flag it yourself for being DNP, you don't get a record, IIRC). If the artist/commissioner/character owner didn't want it uploaded, they can file a takedown (where it's better verified they are who they say they are). If it was the wrong version, it can be replaced. Otherwise, if it's relevant to the site and is of suitable quality, a random uploader shouldn't be able to take it down even if it's soon after upload.

Ah I see, I guess that makes sense. I do feel it's a bummer since it was very handy for things like with my animation where I noticed a frame where the background was flickering because I forgot to turn off a layer and just wanted to remove that and upload a fixed version, or another time where I accidentally posted an early unfinished draft of the animation I was intending to post.

That's what the inferior/duplicate flag is for
And the replacement beta feature

I mean sure, but feels strange that something that is flagged minutes after upload by the person who uploaded it needs to go through a long moderation approval process to be deleted rather than just automatically deleted. I get why that isn't the case for uploads that's been on the site for more than 24 hours, but this just seems like a huge waste of time for moderators to me.

I don't think it was ever automatic. Even that old option still had to wait for a moderator or janitor to get to it, didn't it?

As far as I recall although my vantage point at the time was the same as any other regular User. Just like any other flag, an Admin or Janitor would have had to review it before something could happen with it.

It was the first 48 hours

It was removed several years after that, in 2023

We have never and almost certainly will never have any automated deletion process other than the 30 days on the queue due to most uploaders having nothing to do with the art they're uploading

And even if it was entrusted to artists that are verified on e621, it could still be easily abused since the artist tag is the thing that's verified - not the actual artwork. Just slap your artist tag onto a post and then you can delete it.

If it was removed in 2023 at least that explains why I'm so used to it being an option and why I was confused now that it was gone.

Well why I can kind of see the reasoning for it being removed being that people would wrongly use that flag when they meant something else... I feel it's very silly to not have that as a timed option for something that was recently uploaded, BUT only for the person who uploaded it. If the very same person who uploaded something flags that thing for removal withing 2 hours I think there would be an EXTREMELY high likelyhood that it was because of a posting mistake rather than the post breaking any rules.

I think you could make posts flagged by the original uploader within 2 hours automatically get removed and honestly save yourself as moderators a lot of busywork and for users a lot of unnecessary bureaucracy. You could even let the removal be timed to like 1 hour after the flag by the original author, to give people time to flag it for other reasons in case it was breaking rules.

The vast majority of uploaders have nothing to to with the posts they upload. They are not the artist, character owner, commissioner, copyright owner, nothing. Allowing anyone to delete a post even within a minute would prevent that post from ever being uploaded. That's not something we want.

I'll reiterate again that we will never have an automatic deletion system outside of the queue. It will not happen because we are not an art gallery. Users do not have control over their posts. That is how boorus work. They are aggregators. Allowing users any control over a post only makes more work for us when we inevitably have to go behind them to undelete posts.

As for the flag reason, it never really had a valid use. Any valid reason you can put in there should be covered by another flag option. If you need to provide more info, explain it in the comments.
