Topic: Survey time!

Posted under Off Topic

In the best interests of statistics, I'd like to get to better know the community I'm involved in, in a very non-personal and anonymous way. so I created a survey to do just that.

Furry Survey 2015

It'd be great if you could take a few minutes out of your day to answer some questions, and help fill in the gaps of the understanding of how furries live, outside of the internet! Bear in mind that all responses ARE completely anonymous, but a extrapolation of the data will be posted publicly (Charts, graphcs, etc.).

EDIT: Disclaimer: I am now aware of Adjective Species' similar survey. I am in no way affiliated with said entity, nor am I attempting to bait away surveyees or impersonate a AS surveyor.

Wow, that's a lot of gender labels. Question from the uninitiated, if my character is a hermaphrodite and identifies as such, would that be cisgender? I have no idea ((0_0))

I love working with statistics so I'm interested to see the results. Nice initiative.

I forgot that I did it few minutes ago n_n;

That's a really good question, and one I'm not sure how to answer. Even though it doesn't exactly fit the definition of "cisgender" I'd say its close enough to just go with it. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

Thank you! I'm interested to see the results too.

Most of the genders are pulled directly from Facebook's gender list.

That explains why I've never heard them before.

Wait, why does sexual orientation only get one pick? It's entirely possible to simultaneously be more than one of these.

Also, I get that you ripped these from Facebook, but some of these gender labels seem redundant. They appear to either umbrella or repeat other labels.

Those aside, I think you should also ask if the person currently has a fursona, ever previously had a fursona, or is considering one. I can't be the only one without a fursona and I'd like to get an idea of how many others fall into the same camp.

I noticed that, and appreciate the feedback. I've already started on a less-redundant version of the gender list. I do notice they copy some genders, like "cis male" and "cis man" same thing, right? I also thought about making it a checkbox enabled question, but the way Google Forms formats it (that's a mouthful) makes the list all one column, and therefore extensively long. Thank you for the feedback!

I'm not sure I quite follow, are you saying that asking about ISP's and mobile operators is too personal? I AM looking for suggestions on how to improve, as this is only the very first edition of this survey. What else, if not ISP/MO did you feel was too specific/personal?

Improve on what? If drawing, what does operating systems and ISP's have to do with that?

At the point where you have that many (gender) options to select, I don't understand why you don't just leave it open-ended and let people fill in whatever they want.

I had to leave most of the survey blank because I don't have a fursona. I don't even really consider myself a furry.

All in all I couldn't tell quite what you were trying to figure out with this survey. Many of the questions seemed to come out of nowhere. As a result, I can't offer any suggestions for further improvement.

If there was no list of 69 genders, you wouldn't be able to discover your true sexuality.

I'm looking to improve the fluidity and completeness of the survey, as I do plan to make this a yearly thing. I.. have no artistic talent, so no dice there. :P

Very simply what I'm trying to "figure out" is just basic, general statistics about the furry community as a whole. As to why I didn't leave it open-ended, I tried to be as thorough as possible is because I wanted a neat little chart of all the genders people identified with, which I can't do if I leave it as a text box. As I stated earlier, I pretty much ripped the Facebook list of genders, as it was the most encompassing, if not repetitive, list of genders I had found.

Lol, I don't have a fursona, also they missed an opportunity to ask the really important questions like %of people with autism/%of people living with parents/ color, shape, size, and quantity of bad dragon dildos owned.

Actually could be interesting but I doubt the results would surprise anyone

Agreed, I put in BS. Sorry OP!

You guys have been doing great! Lots of good suggestions, and a TON of responses, specially for some shoddy, thrown together survey. I'll certainly be reworking this for future surveys.

The main thing I've noticed people saying I should change:

1. There should be an option for no fursona.
2. "More controversial topics" such as; percentage of persons living with parents, or persons who fall on the autism spectrum.
3. What age "furry" was exposed to them and what age they became active (in the furry fandom, I assume).
4. Geographical distribution. I'm thinking in a more broad umbrella, as in, not "Do you live in X city, X state" rather, "Do you live in a rural, suburban, etc area?"
5. Less irrelevant questions, like cellphone provider, etc.
6. Penis, apparently. jk jk jk

I noticed in the questions/comments section, somebody asked me if Google did the work for me regarding where people live, and how they connect, and other information like operating system and browser. The answer to that is a resounding no. As far as I'm aware, there's no way to embed a Google Analytic's tracking code or script into Google Forms. I wouldn't do that anyway, its a little underhanded and creepy. I gave you the option to answer (the only question on the survey that was required to be answered was the very first "What is your REAL age?" question) and it was just that, your option. Should Google add this feature in the future, I probably won't include it. That doesn't sit right with me. If you don't feel comfortable giving it in the first place, why should I take sneakily?

EDIT: I also noticed people complaining about the over-completeness and repetitive gender list. I WILL be fixing that in the next one, as well.

I've done big surveys before and google doesn't make any IP addresses or geographical information available to you (you know, unless you for some reason put that as an answer). It basically just throws everything into a big spreadsheet with a timestamp on the left side

1. Do age brackets with the shortest ranges centered around 16-30 (e.g., younger than 14, 15-17, 18-24, 25-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50+). This alows you to gather interesting data while making it feel less like personal information. It also decreases the chance that someone will give BS answers (e.g., 122) for the same reason.
2. Do you have a fursona? Have you ever roleplayed as your fursona? Was this sexually explicit?
3. Have you ever considered yourself a brony?
4. [checkboxes for what places you have accounts in: furaffinity, inkbunny, vcl, etc.] (just go to wikifur to find some more common ones, but keep the list pretty short)
5. Probably more things, but I'm sleepy right now.
