I'm noticing art for some series that has a character and their adopted child tagged something like stepmother_and_stepson. Those words have specific meanings in English: a stepmother of somebody is a woman who married that person's parent, and similarly a stepchild is the child of somebody they had before marrying somebody else. The vibes are completely different.

I had to fix it for a couple MLP and World of Gumball images. Is this the result of some alias or tag corrections that went awry?

I think it's just people being mistaken or confused, there aren't any alias/implication/mass update things I can think of that would have resulted in that.
