Topic: Did the upvote color change?

Posted under Off Topic

Am i going insane, or is the hue for the upvote arrow in the comments ever so slightly different?
I don't know how i noticed this, but i could have sworn the color used to be way more saturated, instead of the more pale green it has now.
Am i crazy?

You can compare the new colors to the old by using the Wayback Machine:

Personally I prefer the old colors. Especially the new green for upvotes and safe rating, sticks out too much.

Yes, some text colors have changed. It's part of an update that added colorblind-friendly palettes to the site.

So it did change. I thought I was going insane too for a sec there lol

Me too.
I presume it wouldn't be too hard to make a palette copying the old colorscheme though

Preferred the old green colour, though glad there's colourblindness support

if you want to change it back, this should work

:root { --palette-text-green: green; }

although, to be honest, html "green" (#008000) is kinda too dark for a website with such a dark background palette. I'd personally set it to something more like #3b3.

Updated

Yay, seafoam green! The best green! And perhaps the best color period. Though this (#76c376) is off and just barely qualifies as seafoam green. Proper/good seafoam green is #93e9be.

Colour changes:

  • Green: ███ Old ███ -> ███ New ███
  • Yellow: ███ Old ███ -> ███ New ███
  • Red: ███ Old ███ -> ███ New ███

I-- I spelled "palette" wrong, somehow.

or like, used the wrong one, pallet is the wooden thing they put stacks of boxes on.

Understandable mixup, you got a lot on your pallet

I'm gonna need a bit of a tutorial on how to do all this. I got the root one in, but I don't exactly know the rest. I'm kind of stupid.

in your settings under advanced there's a custom CSS stylesheet that you can paste/type stuff in to tweak how the site looks.

:root { --palette-text-green: green; }

this specific style thing changes the palette-text-geen variable on the base (:root) of all the pages on the site to the value of green. instead of "green" you can use any hex color code (with the # included) or any named html color, if you wanted to for some reason.

pallette-text-green is called by several things across the website to color some types of text, notably positive post score and the thumbs for AIBUR votes.

So..... I replace the word "root" with another color code with the # in it and that changes the saturation level?

Hey pallet got misspelt again

No, you replace the first green with the colour you want to be changed, and the last green with the hex color code, I believe

Also is there a way to revert the colour change for the AIBUR votes and the feedback colour? they're now using the same colour despite previously being different

replace "green" at the end (between : and ;) another color. or just leave it as "green", which will look like this. the current default value is #76c376.

the :root at the start of the line is the "selector". it's essentially just saying to your browser "hey, stuff in here is for everything on the page".

also make sure that "palette" is spelled right, because I managed to mess that up _again_ somehow.

Besides AIBUR votes, where is that yellow used on the site?

I think I got it. Did what you suggested and went with #3b3 as my choice. Looks green, not too saturated and is dark enough to not bleed into the background.

looking through the big css sheet searching for "var(--palette-text-yellow)", seems like the following use it:
.post-rating-text-questionable
.vote-score-meh
.partial-ticket
and a few related things.

For what it's worth, I did make an internal request for Cinder to reconsider the color changes, and/or rework them into an optional palette of its own, or even make a pale theme with more reworked colors. As the paler colors don't fit e621's established saturated color palette.

I can't promise anything, though. However, I hope something is changed so people don't need to come up with homebrew solutions to reverse this strange design choice.

Make CokeHexagon Classic theme

if anyone wants to change them for themselves, here's a list of the root color vars that are worth knowing about for normal users, with some comments about notable places they're used.

:root{
--palette-background-red: #76312e; /*downvote clicked, redbars*/
--palette-background-red-d5: #642927; /*downvote hover*/
--palette-background-green: #227d2a; /*upvote clicked, greenbars*/
--palette-background-green-d5: #1d6923; /*upvote hover*/
--palette-background-grey: #60686f; /*greybars*/

--palette-text-red: #fe6a64; /*- score, poll down, E rating, record tally neg*/
--palette-text-yellow: #f5d76e; /*poll meh, Q rating*/
--palette-text-green: #76c376; /*+ score, poll up, S rating, record tally pos*/
--palette-text-grey: #aaa; /*0 score, record tally neu*/

--palette-plain-green: #0f0; /*parent border*/
--palette-plain-yellow: #cc0; /*child border*/
--palette-plain-blue: #00f; /*pending border*/ }

Changing the hex colours doesn't seem to do anything though, is there another errant typo

hmm, aside from the formatting and comments it's just copied from the site's .css file...

somewhere along the way a strange zero-width invisible character * got added before the :root. I've removed it from the message, but you should be able to just backspace it from your custom css sheet as well.

*"U+2028 : LINE SEPARATOR", apparently. no idea how that managed to end up in there. glad that gboard's clipboard shows invisible characters as a notdef/tofu or I never would have figured that out.

Glad that the root of the problem has been found. Though is there a way to change the colours of post votes, poll votes, and feedback text colour independently of each other? Or has the update changed that so it's no longer possible

you'd need to change the text-color values for those element's CSS styles individually so that they no longer use whatever var(--palette-*) and instead use just a normal hex value instead.

for example, on the site's default CSS stylesheet, I can search to find the following rule:

.post-rating-text-safe{color:var(--palette-text-green)}

if I didn't want it to use the variable you could add something like this to your custom CSS:

.post-rating-text-safe { color: #0c0; }
:root {
    --palette-text-green: #3E9E49;
    --palette-text-yellow: #FFE666;
    --palette-text-red: #E45F5F;
    --palette-background-red: maroon;
}

works for me

You might be looking at the upvote icon on posts, which still changes the same color after upvoting. It's the number that's more pale now. Otherwise, you might be using a "Custom CSS style" in Settings > Advanced. As mentioned in above comments, it lets you change the colors to anything you want.

This has been a most delectable thread. I feel like I've learned about customization in no small part thanks to dba afish. I will now misuse this new found power for evil by making the most eye-straining palette I can possibly muster. Thank you! Now if you'll excuse me, I got to go make every color on my end neon green, orange or white.

I adjusted the colors once again.
Didn't realize that people had such strong feelings about shades of green.

I changed mine to be bright, neon green. But these are actually very pleasing to look at. I might just undo my custom for these alone.
