Topic: Archiving old sites

Posted under Off Topic

So recently, I've acquired an interest in looking at old Usenet forums for furry art. With that, I've found the moderately-working Digiartists Domain, a seemingly obscure server called Tezuka, and Yerf. I'm just asking if I can archive their art here?

You are free to upload whatever provided it adheres to the Uploading Guidelines and Avoid Posting List.

It also wouldn't hurt to run each image through Similar Image Search or SauceNAO to make sure it doesn't already exist here or exist elsewhere in higher quality.

Please do! There's a real lack of archival of the early internet furry art. It's also a lot of fun going through these old (and often broken) sites (or newsgroups, FTP sites, BBSes...), seeing the 90s web design, the references to things from those times—real time capsules.

But, uh, one of the annoying things with that is also that a lot of the old stuff is (a) sometimes not very artistically executed and/or (b) horribly low-res or compressed (you can't fault them, though; they were trying to send those images through dial-up). And getting two "not approved within 30 days" when I was uploading some stuff from Tigerden 1 kinda discouraged me from uploading more. But I can't really fault the staff here—to me stuff so old is interesting and archive-worthy just because it is so old, but those aren't the rules here.

But even when I was archiving therefrom, I'd already become much less active on the uploading front here, so it's not like I was about to do some great archiving effort that was squandered by those post deletions.

Please do try to source and date well your uploads (and try to populate the artists wiki page with some basic stuff if you create a new artist tag). There's nothing worse than when you find some interesting old art here, and there's no source, no artist tag, no nothing. Not much of an archive effort if you don't know anything about the origin of the archived thing. But even just getting that old stuff here would be very nice.

Yesterday, I actually had a nice forage into the old furry net again. Found about the Furry Code (and a decoder here ), and it's delightfuly vintage and outdated. My furry code is F? A-- C* D H? M! P+ R T++ W- Z? S! RLCT a caln+++ d e++ f+ h# i++ j+ p+ sm. If you are interested in the furry vintage, you might also want to put one up on your online bios to confuse people. xD

Enjoy your archival work!

1: There's still plenty of art there that is not archived. The site is sometimes temporarily down, so try reloading after a few minutes. Also, try disabling any HTTPS-only stuff in your browser, as the site runs only on plain unsecure HTTP.
