Topic: Recent NSA monitoring scandal

Posted under General

So most of you probably know about the recent scandal involving the NSA monitoring the call activity and internet activity of all US citizens.
They get away with this because it "helps fight terrorism" which is a load of crap.
Their new PRISM system that holds and filters this information has a 51% accuracy of identifying that any specific target is foreign.
Which means 49% of the time it's spying on a US citizen.

If you are like me, and agree that this is wrong, and a violation of our 4th amendment rights against unlawful searches please sign the following petition:
http://wh.gov/liKjo

I would also like to point out that the man responsible for bringing this information to the public eye is currently a wanted man for doing so.
If you fell that he should be pardoned as his whistle blowing was in the general interest of the people of the US, please sign this petition as well:
http://wh.gov/liZnR

Please share these petitions with as many people as you can as well.
These issues deserve a quick and strong response by the American people.

Basically the NSA has been compiling a massive database of all the phone call records and internet activity of all US citizens.

To use this information they're supposed to be required to ask a court for permission to use it to track a specific target, and they are supposed to be able to prove that the person they want information about isn't a US citizen.
If they are it's a violation of that citizen's right against unlawful search and seizure(foreign peoples aren't afforded that right apparently).

Problem is, they use a search algorithm that has a 51% accuracy of identifying foreign vs citizen which is basically a coin flip.
They have requested to use this information more than 1000 times based of this algorithm's identification and have been denied access a total of 0 times.

Nearly every president, kanzler, gremium or whatever in europe is already throwing their shit at the US, there is going to be quite a bit pressure from the EU and other countries/states to put that in the open and sort it out.
I'm interested in seeing how it will play out.

Oh, and fyi, you don't have to be a US citizen to sign those petitions, any person over 13 years old can sign.
So if you think that these issues are important, please sign them regardless of where you live.

Remember, almost all internet data (even out of country to out of country) goes through the united states (We are the backbone of the internet). So the NSA's got you too.

It's only called Jet grind radio in north america, in the rest of the world it is generally sold as Jet set radio. (I can't wait for the PC re-release of it)

That is one reason why many of them are pissed.

I'm however at a loss why they would watch germans, everyone knows we aren't terrorists but Grade-A Nazis.

The PC release has been around for ages, I've had it on Steam since it was launched on there.

They really ought to be pissed.
The stated goal of the program is to monitor foreigners.
The spying on US citizens part, which is the only par that actually pisses off Americans, was incidental to that.

Odd, it seems Ippiki has signed that petition.

But then, so has Faggot, Kim Jong Un, Prince, Saddam Hussein, Michael Jackson, Osama bin Laden, Obama, Obama a second time...

Edit: That being said, the White House petitions in my original post will receive a response of some sort as long as they hit 100k signatures.
So, not quite the same thing as the MoveOn.org ones.

It's not like its going to go away. We just have to wait for the next horrific event to provide justification to the NSA's scandal. Also we have no say in what is done about this, we can "suggest" laws to be made, but it can only be stopped IF the Supreme Court finds it unconstitutional, IF they can't say that it is for national security, IF another tragic event that could have been avoided using this system, and IF another issue like this one is put in place IF this one is taken out. That's a lot of ifs, and I see no end to this.

So clearly we should just do nothing about it.

Or you know, speak up so that the politicians know we're pissed about this.
That way it will at least have the potential to be a platform issue in upcoming elections.
Maybe then we can get some people in government that will try to do something about it.

To be honest, if it was used appropriately, I wouldn't mind the existence of the database much.
But they should be able to prove that it's not being used on a US citizen without the appropriate probable cause with extreme certainty.

I would prefer to be rid of it entirely, but I'm a realist and I know that the likelihood of the gov't trashing that much data for any reason is unlikely.

The thing is, the first time they try to take anyone to court with that information, all someone has to do is cite search and seizure laws and nail them to a wall. They had no probable cause, all information is thus invalidated, any attempts to try them are thrown out, and they cannot be charged with whatever they were doing again due to double jeopardy.

Also I'm sure that EVENTUALLY it may nab a bad guy instead of an innocent person, so there's always that.

Slight problem with that.
This is being done under the governance of the patriot act, in an anti-terrorism capacity.
If you are found to be "guilty" it's not going to court.

I think that you all are missing the real point of what's going on here.

How should we be tagging this event? What gender is PRISM? Has there been any R34 of it yet? Do shady back room deals violating civil liberties get the 'rape' tag or not?

Good thing the government has a back up of it.
Those guys are so thoughtful.

This really shouldn't surprise anyone. In fact, I'd be more surprised if they WEREN'T heavily monitoring internet traffic.
